Hello all...
I am looking to open my show with a series of silks appearing rapidly... Is there such a gimmick out there?

There are many, many options out there. Start with the set of Rice books for ideas. It will save you a fortune in buying pre-made tricks in the wrong colors and sizes for your show. (There is frequently a Rice (Silk King studios) banner to click on here on The Magic Café.)
One of the easiest is the flash silk appearance and then going into a series of silk fountains. Have fun! Bob Magic By Sander |

Get the Rice Diminishing Silk Booklet, it has a silk production that Mr. Electric and other professional use. Instead of the silks diminishing, they are produced at the same size. This is also explained on the Mr. Electric video from Stevens Magic.
The only downside is that you have to pick up the 1st silk or produce it from a prop, i.e. Genii Tube, Phantom Tube, etc. |

Also, check out Silk Dream by Werry - expensive ($30) but flashy...

Hi:
Are you looking for a way to produce the silks without apparatus? If so, I agree that Rice's Diminishing Silk production is terrific. Another source besides the Rice books is the Jeff McBride "Magic on Stage" series. He shows how to set it up and perform it; I'm pretty sure the routine is on volume three of the series (Exotic Mysteries). If you don't mind apparatus, there are lots of possibilities that immediately come to mind. Ron |

It says the following: Absolutely no sleeving required. Sleeves can be rolled up! Nothing is hidden in hands before or after production! Can be performed at any time in the show! No body turning! Your hands never leave spectators' sight! Never do your hands touch your body or clothing! Can be performed surrounded! It looks like a device needs to be attached to your body somewhere..or am I just nuts. I will probably pick it up. $30 ain't that bad

I have the Silk Dream and I don't really like it. Let's just say your instincts are right on target (I can't say much more in an open forum). It does limit the size of silk that appears. I think you're better off with other ways of making silks appear (both non-gimmicked and gimmicked options). I agree with Bob --- you would be better off getting Rice's volume 1 for almost the same price. I would also recommend a few videos (Rice's Encyclopedia of Silk Magic has already been recommended): Paul Diamond's "Symphonette in Silk", Duane Laflin's DVD on the Silk Fountain, and Peter White's "Why Knot Silks" (volumes 1-4 as starting points). Keith Clark's "Silks Supreme" booklet is not bad either (adjustments would have to be made depending on your attire).

What I am looking for is a device or method to light a piece of flash paper and toss it to reveal a silk or silks... Is there something like that on the market?

There is one way that comes to mind right away in which you can do this with up to four or five silks and no g*****k. I guess you can say it is an ung*******d version of the Lightning Silk Production g*****k. Actually, I think I would recommend this latter g*****k over the Silk Dream but like I said earlier: this can also be done without it. It depends on what you prefer.

I have used the Silk Dream - it shoots a 12" silk approx. 18" up- not all that impressive on its own, but in the middle of a routine I have gotten 'ahhhs' when used as a production......

Magicalmischief -
This may not be exactly what you are looking for (and I haven't seen it demo'd, so I don't know how it looks): Silk 'N Flash, By Morrissey Magic. Look for the third item down on the page. It can be found at some other dealers. I think it is meant to produce one 12" silk, nothing larger. Where you go from there, is up to you. - Donald

Encore Magic sells the Berland Silk Appear. I have used it for years for just one silk. I would say you can do a 24" silk with it and a little practice.
Bob is right on with the Rice Encyclopedias. There is so much there and it is organized logically so you can find what you need at that particular time.

I've just purchased Silk Dream, having never seen it performed, I'm having problems following what the instructions mean. Could anyone help me out with a few handling tips?
thanks, Matt |

There's another method which involves crumpling the flash paper around a balled silk, lighting and tossing straight up. It's a very nice, visual transformation, but don't use a nice silk.

I have the silk in a flash, and I frankly don't like it. I device does not handle well and is cumberson to use. I use the Vito Lupo method that is in the Jeff McBride Stage Magic videos. I believe it is vol. 2.

I'm not familiar w/ silk in a flash, but if I were to do what was described with flash paper, I would use my finger flasher (with flash cotton) and time it perfectly with the silk dream for a truly flashy production....warpod - what problems are you having? It's just a way to very unexpectedly produce a silk which appears in the air...

I had a Silk Dream a few years ago. I practiced with it to get the timing down. But it kept misfiring. I thought I had that worked out. However on my first performance using this new wonder, I am introduced and a silk "appears" before I can even walk out onto stage...just a tad early. Maybe it was just my model, but I got rid of it.
