Actually, I think this whole conversation has taken a very nice turn. For the most part, Barry is correct that preventative measures can save you a great deal of headaches....but there will be the occasional problem depending on your venue.
I also agree that Snap shouldn't be letting others dictate when, where, and what he performs. Snap, you aren't a performing monkey. Do things on your own terms. Never let the audience lead you anywhere, your job is to lead them. As to the pseudonym, there are a few people on this board who know my real name. It is basically a privacy thing. Also, in this computer era, if someone sees you perform and enjoys the experience, that person may very well Google you. I wouldn't want anyone stumbling onto this site from searching my name and then learning how things are done. That wouldn't help me very much at all |

I agree that proper presentation and audience management can probably take care of 95% of the "grabbers" but there are some people who will ALWAYS want to examine the props no matter how good your presentational skills are.
There's a school of thought that says that you should NEVER let the audience examine the props even if they could. It looks too suspicious when, after letting them see 3 props in a row, you refuse to let them get their hands on one. I agree with this overall but I LIKE to have the audience examine things when they can. I deal with it like this. If I can, I pocket the gaff prior to the revelation of the trick and make sure that I have a duplicate non-gaffed version of the gaff in my pocket that I can bring out if I have to. Also, I generally try to (casually) put things away when I'm done with them. (My mom taught me well). When I have an examinable case, I "carelessly" leave the item(s) lying around for a little bit. I never ask people to examine things unless I'm giving them away as a souveneir (it's just not my style). Steve |

Thank you guys soooooooooooooo much for all your help, but I think I should clarify some things. first of all, this is especially to barry, I am a 16 year old girl, and I am not particularly fond of someone, anyone knowing my first and last name and my state and country (i have a very unique last name), you never know who's who nowadays, how do we know your real name's barry, you could be an alexander for all I know. secondly, I don't let these guys dictate where and when I do a magic trick. it is my polocy to only to a trick when asked (it's just my opinion that they'll enjoy it more that way)but only for those I approve of. I have yet to do a trick for this particular group of guys, and they've been asking me since the beginning of the year. please don't take this the wrong way, I just saw some errors, and I thought I should clarify some things.

Snap,
Thank you for clarifying your situation. You've just described a dynamic that is not an easy one to deal with. You're a 16 year old girl, and every day, there's a group of guys who are asking for you to do a magic trick. You say that at least one of these guys will heckle you. I must confess that I have absolutely NO direct experience that applies to your situation. Maybe you can work on something that's simple, magical and relatively fool-proof. Practice until you can do the magic in your sleep. Then practice another month longer so that you are absolutely at ease. Then, if I were you, I'd be tempted to wait for that happy day when that one guy (the heckler) is not with the rest of the group! Because you're a minor, I understand your desire to remain anonymous. I'm an old guy, and this is not much of a problem for me. I really don't feel any need to hide. And I do understand the problems associated with having an unusual last name...

Snap,
I have sent you a private message to give you the name of a female magician who might possibly have better insights about this particular dynamic although I still think most of what was already discussed is pertinent. In any case, keep us informed of your progress. J-L |

I recieved your pm, enigmo, and I responded. thanx again for the help, guys, but I must admit that I don't particularly want to perform for these guys, just to prove to myself that they cannot force me into performing, no matter how much they ask, nag, beg or plead. thanx again for the responses.

Well, in my original post, I didn't provide all the details that have later come out, sorry about that.
