Is Sal Piacente Street Monte Three Shell Game any good for street magic?

From what I understand, no shell game is good for street magic. "In House" private performances? Yes. Get arrested on the streets for running a con game? Not worth the risk.
If you want to learn it right, I'd go for Whit Hayden's newest DVD on the shell game instead of Sal's. The price is about the same. http://www.schoolforscoundrels.com

I would avoid shells on the street. Even if you are a magician. I was in Florida watching three guys con people with shells. About five min's later the guys where in cuffs.

Its Ok to use the trick to entertain but certainly not for the purpose of running a con game. Do it indoors and not in the streets. The same goes with the three card monte.

As others have said, don't perform it on the streets for money! But if you are asking about teaching, I have them and I think their okay. He doesn't teach you anything beyond basics in the three shell game. I haven't look at it for a while but from what I remember he went into an okay amount of detail. I personally don't like 3 shell game and Sal Piacente, but I do like his 3 card monte DVD. I learned the basics of this very well and some more advanced stuff. He teaches this very well and I do a little game for all my family and friends when I see them, but I wouldn't perform any of these on the streets because they are iligal. If you do it for money and police officers would arrest you and confiscate (I hope I spelled that right) the shells.
Stick to the classics,

Learn how to get out of those cuffs and run away, not really hard to do ;D jus kidding.
if you wanne do it for the public don't do it with money and put up some table and a poster or sth that will make you look like a kind of magician, not like a punk scamming people |

At the Abbott's Close-Up Convention, I saw a strategy that Bruce Bernstein used with the monte that could be used with shells. The spectator is give a chip to be used as the bet. That way you control who is allowed to bet and the person is only allowed to bet the chip, which you gave to him. If I were doing it on the street, I would also have a little badge or sign saying that no money may be used to bet with, and that it's for entertainment and education purposes only.
I'm thinking about performing monte in the bars, for fun, but I wouldn't allow money to be near the cards during the routine. |

Spectator control via the use of poker chips is very effectively used and fully explained by Bob Sheets on the new SfS Three Shell DVD. In my humble opinion, this piece of instruction alone is well worth the price of the DVD to anyone who does the 3 shell game.

Sal's DVD is an excellent resource for learning the nuts and bolts of the 3- shell game. Having said that, if you want to see a fantastic presentation of the 3- shell game as a "trick" check out Charlie Frye's Eccentricks Volume 2. He presents the 3- shell game with rhyming patter, and it's a thing of beauty...

It was fun to learn the moves, and practice with them, but I never really took it further. I didn't have much success with this in front of real people (mainly because I was dumb and didn't know any better and bought the MM Golden Shells, which don't work very well). It's "ok" I've certainly come across much worse products "gen x" the teaching is fine, but the routine is just a tad bland. If you really have your heart set on it, buy it, you will get enjoyment from it, but there is certainly much better three shell game material out there. The Card Monte DVD however (as mentioned above) was very good, and I use the routine quite often. (I also find it easier and more fun to play with than the shells, because it really doesn't matter what surface you have.) |

I thought I knew something about the shell game. Boy, was I wrong! Keep up the good work, Whit. I'll be anxiously awaiting the rest of the series.
