HEHEHE, alas another believer::::))) I still have the box that was attached to the balloon. Its about the size of a box of Tide. Guess eventually I need to send it back to the government:)

I'm sure the Men in Black will be right over to retrieve their box.
For god's sake don't open it and deny it if you did!

What a great collector's item. I would have kept it and not say a word to anyone.
Since so many people now know about it I would give it back ASAP!

I've been paying taxes to the Feds for decades so I feel that I am part owner of that balloon therefore I give you permission to keep my share of it. Other's may feel the same as I do and don't forget that you also payed your share of taxes so feel free to keep your share as well .

Does it belong to the govt, or your local news station?

I don't know of any news stations that send up their own weather balloons. These are generally sent up by NOAA. It's less expensive for news stations to subscribe to the local weather radar feed from NOAA than it is for them to send up their own balloons.

Just a few weeks ago our local station KING 5 News/Weather visited a local High School and let the students launch a weather balloon complete with an orange box attached for taking measurements.
I am sure you are correct Bill and maybe King 5 uses NOAA only but our Weatherman (or is that Weatherperson? must be PC ) is not just a reporter of the weather but is a Meteorologist as well. I don't know if the launching of balloons is something they do on a regular basis or not.
