What effect did you learn and could not wait to try it out
on an audience? You practiced and practiced. You executed it flawlessly. But the spectators' reactions just weren't what you expect. A letdown. What did you do about it? Here is my contribution: For me, this effect was Jumping Gemini. I think there were just too many phases for a layman. Magicians love it but for me it went on too long. I have never done it since. Lively discussion follows:

The Coin Connection... for exactly the same reasons as you described Frank.
How did I resolve it? I completely retooled it into a routine that didn't take 20 minutes to get through... and for some strange reason that seemed to work for me Mike |

Hmm... Ring and String (good reaction but just not for *me*) also Cups and Balls(again just not for me).
Plus a couple standup coin routines that aren't just for me. I think the hardest part of finding good material isn't finding the material itself, but finding what works for *you*. |

A letdown is when you create your own effect and you perform it flawlessly and you do not get the reaction you wanted.
This happened to me two weeks ago. But all I did was change a few things and the reactions are much better now. You really have to work with a trick to get all that it is worth out of it. Even if it is your own effect. |

Traveling Cash.
I always thought it looked cool, but I have performed it three times and got almost no reaction (I scored some pity amazement one time), even though I can perform it flawlessly. It seems that people don't even realize anything out of the ordinary has happened. |

Mine was a really pretty stage effect in the 70s. It was color-changing plumes. I even bought another set of nicer custom made ones and tried it again. They were still a poor fit for me. So I sold them for peanuts at the next auction. (Even magicians kiss a lot of frogs!)

Mine was the MacAbee rings. I thought I'd found the perfect table-hopping rings, but no one even blinked. Even the cool climax where all the rings come apart simultaneously did'nt get any wows.
My 5-year-old niece thought they were pretty, so I gave them to her as bracelets.
Everybody wants to beleive.....we just help them along.

Cups and Balls for me. I love performing it, but everytime people just go 'Big Deal!' I was really dissapointed too since I bought a good set from Bill Palmer as well as Michael Ammar's DVD. They just don't seem right for anyone. To fix it, I just used my mini $7 Shot Glass cups and balls. I then just made up some patter to do with 'Alcohol etc' and I had myself a nice pocket effect

Mine was always the Cups and Balls as well. (Seems to be a theme here!)
Mind you, I do not have the most mind-blowing routine on the face of the earth, but I think it was prettty decent. No one else seemed to think so..... Oh well, back to the old drawing board!!! |

I created a patter for Twisting the Aces that I thought would lift the trick to another level with respect to entertainment value. When I showed it to a co-worker, he commented the trick wasn't nearly as good as the one I had shown him a couple of weeks before.
(@Frank Starsini: That trick was Jumping Gemini!! - I also love it!) I guess that some spectators value the actual effect more than the patter, while others prefer hearing the story to watching the magic. BTW, I might post the patter for discussion if anybody is interested. |

Hand Cremation. Tried to do it straight a dozen different ways, audience seemed unmoved. Changed to a comedy routine in which the trick was actually reduced to a mere prop, and it went over big. Sure looked good in the magic catalog.

Frank,
I have had the same reaction to Jumping Gemini (so to did Mr Ortiz, when I saw him perform it)...It is amazing though the positive reaction to Twins, which I find similar in method if not effect. That one they ask for again and again! Go figure. |
