Los Angeles 4/1/05:
In a move to appease local Indian Tribal Leaders and legal Card Rooms, the famed Magic Castle will begin a test program banning the use of any Playing Cards on the 1st Sunday of each month. It is thought that this move will not have an affect on aproximately 2% of the resident Magicians. In another development and in reaction to an ACLU potential law suit, the Castle is dropping it's long established requirement for proper attire and will allow Jeans and T-shirts. Bare feet however will still be frowned upon, causing one dissident to threaten another discrimination suit via the ACLU. Spokespersons for the magic castle said they will fight that one and that "...only fools would attempt to gain entrance without shoes." Fools indeed! :) Doug

Well Dag-Nabbit! (Penalty, two point, for speaking like a prospector from 1850's California!)
Good April Fool's joke, though.
There she was, a dodgy old prune in a tiara, rushing at me waving a sword. Do all knights suffer this whilst being made?

Banning card tricks once a month is a FANTASTIC idea... is it for real?? Or an april fools joke?? If its a joke I think they should really try it.. FORCE people to be original.

Wrong direction?? how do you figure??, I think people would want to go to "non card night" for sure.. Why not?? ONE day out of seven... whats the prob??

By similar logic what would be the "prob" of the government decreeing that one day a month one can not speak against the actions of the administration? How about one day a month artists aren't free to create works that denounce nationalism or persecution? How about one day a month we just "forbid" one form of expression or another for whomever in whatever context in whatever forum desired? Get the idea? Maybe you don't like pasteboards but I (and many others) do. If I create a new effect using them and am excited to show them to someone and happen to be at the Castle on that particular day is it fair to me to tell me "THOU SHALT NOT REVEAL THY NEW CARD TRICK HERE AND NOW" when someone else is free to do a standard 2,000+ year old cups and balls routine? Yeah. That's the "prob."

Are you saying that you can't be original with cards? Mike |

Not at all.. I just think adding a little spice to things ie banning cards on a day of the month is healthy.. I would say at least 50$ of ALL tricks are card tricks, a little day to do other stuff than cards, book non card performers, or get the card performers to do something other than cards is a grest idea.
And mentaivic I find the examples you used comparing it to are WAY out of context.. By similar logic what would be the "prob" of the government decreeing that one day a month one can not speak against the actions of the administration? are you kidding me? we're talking about card tricks.. |

I love it when being Iconoclastic (with a single day lifespan!) turns to a serious discussion...mmm mmm mmm
I'm with mentalvic all the way. We here in the US are under assault by the ACLU and other Busy Bodies who are no more than over grown Hall Monitors. I personally don't care for more than One card trick at a time...but so what...who cares...if FORCED NOT to do card tricks...I would then specialize in them just to bust the balls of the socialist buggers who impose the restrictions...but that's me...so what. Carry on...

Is it okay to fire a gun (BLANK) in the castle? I had a rather Duchampian idea for a routine.
