The magician that does the cups and balls on the new Cellini DVD does a good job. I like the presentation and I believe it is Cellini's routine.
My question is about the vanishes of the 3 balls at the start of the routine. I like the way they were done, however upon closer examinination, there were literally no sleights done. He picked up the ball with one hand, put it in the other hand, and just pretended he still had it in the first hand by raising it and holding an empty fist. I was surprised. It cerainly seemed to go over well. What do you think about that (non)-technique he uses? Frank

Frank,
I haven't seen it, but the idea of non-technique is kind of interesting, as spectators are looking for it. --Ron |

It is a bold move but it seems to work. You yourself had to look at it twice before you saw what he was doing. The average spectator on the street hasn't got the ability to rewind and slo-mo a live performance.

You are talking about Sunny Holiday. Sunny is a student of Cellini, Slydini, and Frank Garcia.
He is a complicated man who loves magic like it was a living a breathing thing. This lack of technique you mention is actually a very powerful technique in and of itself. It confused me too when I first learned it Gazzo is a master of the non move as well. Here's why it works. most people when they think of a magician they think of glittery, box jumping, effects done to cha-cha music. A busker is a gypsy. He is a living breathing person standing three feet away. He picks up a ball, places it in his hand, waves a magic wand, and it is gone! Doesn't that sound impossible! To the lay audience that is how it looks. They are not familiar to our methods so it goes right by them. They all know the French drop, but a retention vanish or a simple natural drop vanish goes right by them. Sunny makes it go right by them three times in a row! Watch the tape again and listen to the audience. It is brilliant. Those people are fooled! A lot of buskers don't watch a guy like Sunny with an honest eye. I'm glad you saw how powerful that simple, simple, sleight can be. That entire routine is available in the Cellini book. To say the book is brilliant is like saying, putting a man on the moon was a little complicated. If you are interested in being a real student of this type of magic the best advice I can offer is to study the work of Cellini. No matter what else you may hear, every busker I've ever met who has worked the street for any length of time will tell you Cellini's work on the subject is the best. I'll tell Sunny you liked his work. He likes to hear stuff like that better than anything else. Best, Dan- "MT is one of the reasons we started this board! All I can say is, this Cafe is a wealth of information.
Prior to this place, I would have never heard of Cellini (maybe that's odd, but I am cloistered--no blazing metropolis here!) What written work would I find that routine in? Thanks. --Ron |

Hi Ron,
Cellini's book is called, "The Royal Touch." Like a lot of magic books the spelling isn't always spot on and it was translated to English from another language. But, the content is brilliant. I think you'll love it! Best, Dan- "MT is one of the reasons we started this board! I had no idea who Cellini was one month ago and I already took time off work and went to the lecture an hour from home, bought the DVD, love his stuff, bought a set of Phoenix Cups 2 days ago, expect to get eric evan's monkeyfist balls soon, and now I HAVE TO GET The Royal Touch. Where can I get that book????
... and all thanks to The Magic Cafe. so, let me see.. if I calculate correctly, time off work, cups, dvd,notes,gas,balls... The Cafe owes me about $400. Frank

Could you give a brief description of the material covered by the Cellini book? What stands out most? Cheers ML |

Greetings and Salutations All,
Cellini's lecture comes almost directly from The Royal Touch, except in Royal Touch, many, if not most of his effects and more are explained. You've got to get around some grammar errors and typos, but it's worth it, and unless you're a writer/editor, I suspect most of the editing lapses will pass unnoticed by most readers. If you can manufacture any way to see his lecture, do so. Watching him perform is worth the price of admission. I believe I got my copy of The Royal Touch from Hank Lee's for $40 or $60 USD. I think, although someone here may have more up-to-date info, that the book is becoming scarce. You may want to check with H&R, Hank Lee or Denny & Lee, I generally have good luck with them. Failing that, do a net search for "The Royal Touch" and Cellini, and you should find a Swiss (?) website, which I believe still has English copies, but I have no idea as to the price and cost of shipping. Good luck on you search. Trust me, it will be worth it. Cellini's a genius! Joe in KC Choose an extraordinary life, live a great adventure! |

The chapters are: "ALL the worlds a stage" This covers where to work, and money. "The Workshop" Props Gimmicks, sundries. "Passport to freedom" Color, sound, movement, comedy lines, the pitch, the broken circle. These thirty pages are the real work. Most of this is also contained in the lecture notes. The rest of the book is tricks and routines. But unlike most magic books, these pieces are presented with the reason why behind them. Reading this I was surprised to find that the trick itself is often the least important part of the lesson. But these are all great tricks. Covered are, the thumb tip, Money effects, cards, and coins. **Start Edit** AND TWO FULL CUPS AND BALLS ROUTINES AS WELL AS THE LORD OF THE RINGS!! I can't believe I forgot that first time around! **End Edit** In the back of the book are a couple of very short but important essays. In between are tons of pictures and tid bits. This book is the true masterwork on street MAGIC. Guys I have tons of respect for but who are not qualified to speak on the work of a busker panned this book horribly. It was beaten up not due to content but because of editing and typos. This is the life’s work of the greatest teacher of street magic. His chops are respected the world over. You cannot find a magician anywhere who will tell you he is anything less than brilliant. As a street magician, if you read this book with the respect that kind of person deserves, it will speak to you far beyond the printed page. It is all in there. Read it cover to cover. And you will have all the knowledge it takes to go out on the street and make a GOOD living. This is the book that got me out on the street. If I am talking about this book I suppose I should talk about the "other" book as well. I tried to work from the David Groves book but the more I learned, the less he seemed to know about the subject. David Groves is probably a nice guy, but I think he was trying to make a quick buck about a subject he didn't know much about. I don't think there is anything wrong with that. He's just trying to make a living, same as the rest of us. I had dinner with Gazzo and Cellini not to long ago (Yes, both at the same time! I felt like a bat boy sitting with Micky Mantle and Babe Ruth!) and both of them agreed with me on Groves as well. Gazzo's quote was, "Not qualified". Buyer beware. I was so blown away by the elegance of simplicity in Sunny's handling with the cups and balls that I have nearly worn our that section on my "Art of" videotape. I have watched it clear through in slo-mo several times, because once just wasnt enough to catch it all!
I had thought that the Royal Touch might not be necessary after the Video, but after the video, I am thirstier than ever for more of it. So I will definitly be picking it up soon. I just got my new cups and between the Lord and master of the Rings Video that I just got from Kozmo, (Kozmo - you are the Man! Thanks!) and the cups and balls by Sunny and then with what is in the Royal Touch book, I am really excited about taking this stuff - out for a walk! Thanks for the good info Danny. Wow! Cellini and Gazzo at once! What a moment! BroDavid

Great stuff Dan, thanks for that. Well worth me looking out the book. I'm mainly a juggler, but it sounds as if Cellini's book would still be of benefit for my street shows. I won't let the typo's bother me (even though I'm a copywriter as well as performer). Mind you, I can read German, so I could always opt for the original.

Dan, I'm also interested in his jumbo coin production. When I saw it, I thought, "Hey, that's cool. I'll rewind and see where that big coin came from. Oh! He just pulled it out of his front pocket right in front of everybody."
He is not doing moves like a typical closeup magician might do and have the jumbo in his belt behind his back. It's just right there in his darn pocket. He reaches in, grabs it, and then produces it via shuttle pass. And it works! Where does Sunny work? New Orleans?
