I have never been to a convention, and I am not part of any magicians society or club. What convention would be good to start with? Money and travel is not a problem....I would love to go to Sweeden for FISM next year! Is it better to start at a small convention or does it not matter?

It doesn't matter. It sounds like each one is worthwhile. I am looking forward to Kramiens Jamboree coming up in 4 weeks. It's just south of you and within driving distance. It is going to be quite the celebration this year as Stan is celebrating his 80th birthday. If you are looking for your first convention to attend, I recommend this one as it is close, affordable, and you will meet magicians from all over the NW as well as Seattle.

other than that... My own! :D Oh yeah Abbotts USED to be my favorite. I almost was born there since its always 99% of the time during my birthday but in 1974 it was the 3rd week instead. I was 10 days old when I made my first stage appearance there and I GOT A STANDING OVATION! But its not the same any more. EVERYONE IS PRETTY MUCH DEAD THAT KNEW ME and most of people that go are a bunch of snots! haha just kidding. I'm a bit slap happy today! Quote:

The line-up is off the chain and it looks like a good convention.

If you look at Craig Dickson’s magic calendar you will find dozens of conventions. Usually two to five per month.
My personal favorites are Las Vegas Magic Seminar (#3), Abbotts Magic Convention (#2), and FFFF (#1!!!!!!) IBM Ring 333 (The Fox Ring) put on the Michigan Magic Day 2004 convention in Kalamazoo Michigan last year and with acts like Allan Ackerman, Gene Anderson, Jerry Andrus, Stephen Bargatze, Todd Charles, Chuck King, and Garrett Thomas on the bill the convention was GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRREAT!!!!!! Thanks to all of the above for a job well done. This year Michigan Magic Day will be in Flint Michigan. Like the two Michigan Magic Days that we put on, Flint looks like one not to be missed. The date is May 21st, 2005. On the bill at this writing are David Acer, Chef Anton, Tony Blanco, Mark Cannon, Whit Haydn, Nathan Kranzo, Losender, Billy McComb, Luna Shimada, and Tomsoni & Co. Great line up guys and you can count on me being there. Take care and take cards Antony Gerard |

Greetings and Salutations all,
I'm rather partial to the World Magic Seminar. Its the first convention I went too and is the one I look forward to the most. I'll be going to IBM and SAM this year too so my opinion might differ slightly after I return but there's just something about WMS. I'll be moving to Vegas in little under a month now so I might find that my attraction was more the "vegas high" than anything else, but it was my introduction to the larger magic community. Plus I met Two Time International Champion of Magic Matthew David Stanley at WMS, so why shouldn't it be special lol. Hope to see all of you soon, especially my teen cohorts. Danny Crook

My favorite convention is only 1 week away from today. I am so excited. I've waited a year for this. I need to check out some of the other conventions as well, then I don't have to wait so long to get my fix!

What is my favorite magic convention?
That is a hard question to answer because everyone had something different. I have attended a few conventions such as SCAM, Magi-Fest, & Winter Carnival. However, I will be making my first trip to Abbott's Get-Together 2005 where I will be performing my Award-Winning Rubik Cube Act on the Wednesday night show. Hopefully after Wednesday then I can enjoy Abbott's Get-Together and hanging out with some of my magician friends. Hope to see you there!

I have been attending magic conventions for over 20 years and I want to say it is the people who attend the conventions that make them the best. It is not the featured acts.
I love to watch the evening shows and to attend the lectures but it is the time spent with people in the dealer's room, between events, or late at night that make it special. Magic Week in Colon Michigan is one of my favorites, The Abbott's Magic Company spawned this event. It is important that you understand that this convention is a bit different in that it is a called a Get-together. It is more like a reunion, the same people every year. I think it would be wise to know one else who is attending. This way you get the inside scoop on the what and where's of this convention. If you can't make Magic Week work for you then I suggest Magi-Fest, Columbus,Ohio. It is the longest running, best organized magic convention I know of. If you can deal the cold weather then this is a winner. My favorite is the International Brotherhood of Magicians' convention. Why, you never know what you will see from year to year. The featured acts are all top quality. Not to mention the lectures too. The people are all top quality magicians from all around the world. The dealers room is also the best. That's my two cents.... Never criticize someone else until you have walked a mile in their shoes. Then, when you do criticize them, you will be a mile away from them and you will have their shoes.

What convention is my favorite? I love them all! They are all unique. It just depends on what type of person you are and what type of magic you like. I love attending them all because I love meeting new people, seeing old friends, and being able to see all the great magic. It is also fun to watch what type of magic goes on in the hallways and lounges.

I've been to the last two WMS, and they are fantastic. As with most magic conventions, the real fun happens after the dealer's room closes and the shows are over. Just hanging out, sessioning and shooting the bull with guys from all over the world. I've also been to MAGIC LIVE 13. Evidently there is going to be another one in 2007. Take my adivce and DO NOT MISS THIS CONVENTION! These are great. You never know who is gonna show up. Seriously, they make no announcement who is going to appear, perform, lecture and Stan never fails to make it great.
