Not familiar with the routine. Can you elaborate on it?

As for background music, check out "Ambient Egypt" for some good material.

The Sands From Egypt trick is where the magician magically turns a bowl of clear water black, then proceeds to throw 3 different colors of sand into it. By the audience choice of colors, the magician reaches into the bowl and pulls out a dry handful of the colored sand. At the end, the magician turns the water back to clear. The routine and patter has to do with ancient egypt's mystery and the pharoah's magi. Thanks for the response!!

Do a search on Google for "egyptian music" . You'll find tons of stuff.

If you don't care about being authentic as much as being theatrical then you can probably find some good
"Egyptian" type music on old movie soundtracks like The Mummy (the original Boris Karloff film) or even
Casablanca (ok, it's not Egypt , it's Morocco , but most people in your audience won't know the difference.....artistic license ! )

There are a couple of nice atmospheric "Egyptian" type cuts on some of the film music CD's by the Dutch group The Beau Hunks (film music by LeRoy Shield) . Check on Amazon.com for Beau Hunks.

Well, if you have a record shop nearby, then pay a visit to the international section. If you have a local SCQA group near you, then call and ask them about their middle eastern group members, as there will be some musicians ( and dancers!) among them, you would be surprised at just what a single drum with the correct beat will do. If you need help getting some let me know I know a few drummers and Oud players out this way who might consent to make you some tape.
Although I have to say I have always heard that particular effect referred to as the Hindu Sands, and not Egyptian.

Thanks. The effect may have more than one name. When I saw Kirby VanBurch perform it, he called it the Sands From Egypt. And I have heard it called the Hindu Sands. So, maybe it can be themed or whatnot from the name. Thanks again.

I know the principal behind this trick. Out of curiosity, what's it like working with the sand? This seems like it would become a messy illusion after a while. Can you get replacement sand easily?

It does stick to your hands after they are wet, but I just wipe it off with a towel and continue the trick, so it's not too messy. Well, when you buy the trick, all you're buying is the sand and other supplies, not the bowls ,the bowls have to be bought seperately. So you pretty much just buy the trick over again.

You could look into some instrumentals by the band Nile. Songs like "Hall of Saurian Entombment" and "The Nameless City of the Accursed" are good. I say instrumentals because Nile is a death metal band and you wouldn't want that playing in your show. Their frontman, Karl Sanders, put out a solo album called "Saurian Meditation." It's a bunch of ambient middle-eastern music. http://shop.relapse.com/store/product.aspx?ProductID=19992
They have two full songs to listen to.

If you decide to use any of these in your show, you can contact Karl Sanders on the Nile forum at http://nilechat.net
He posts under the name KarlSanders. (Who would've guessed, eh?)

Good luck!

There are at least two different ways to do this. One does not have a problem with replacing the sand at all.

But it is a very messy illusion in any case.

I'm thinking of adding this illusion to my own show.

Can anyone tell me if the above link is the best method?

If so, can you tell me where to purchase it (the supplier in the link is out of them).

If not, can you tell me where I can find the best method?

Any advice or help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Thankyou.

This is the version I use and it works well for me. I don't really know if there is a "better" way or not, because this is the only method I've worked with and I've gotten used to it. You can also find this same product on many other magic sites, but I belived I contacted The Trickery directly and told them I would like to purchase this. If you have any more questions, please feel free to PM me. Good luck!
