Approach them and ask if they have a minute. Explain that you are a magician and you want to show them a trick. And if you're nervous man, just do it anyways. In time you'll find that it's no problem. Just keep doing it man.

Do you find its best approaching people when they are seated or when they are standing and waiting, I always feel when people are sitting down you are going to be intruding on them. what do you think?

Approach people but not too close and start doing your magic while asking them to look , watch , can you see this etc. Being polite and introducing yourself and asking if they have time these are all ok but not what I do anymore .
Just my two cents Zac

The main thing is to make sure that your first illusion is a killer. If you firmly establish in their minds that you are indeed a magician, they will hang around for several other illusions and possibly even ask you if you do parties. Sell yourself big.
Personally I use something like a shrinking dime and approach a stranger with something bizzar enough it sparks their interest. I usually say something like: "Hey, would you like to see something really cool? I've discovered how to get the copper out of the inside of our quarters and dimes." This approach is just enough off-the-wall that it sparks interest without making you look like a raving lunatic. Find something that works for your personality. Oh, one more thing. Sometimes you approach people who just are not interested. Respect it. Don't take it as personal rejection. View it consideration. This will do a lot for making you look more professional. |

Here's my way of approaching people. I don't. What I like to do is take a friend with me to hold a camera. We won't even be recording anything but I'll act like I'm doing magic for the camera. I'll make sure whatever I'm doing is visual and it won't normally take 5 minutes for several people to come up and say, "What are you doing with that stuff" or "Show me some of that crazy ****." So I've magically made an audience appear without even approaching them.
There are some occasions when I don't have a camera man so I'll just stand around and do something like "Helicopter Card" or "UFO" and people will gather around. Hope that helps. |

Yeah, I mostly make people approach me.... I remember back when I was in highschool, id just be sitting at my desk listening to the teachers lecture, and nonchalantly (spelling?) floating a pencil, or making it move with my mind... lol.... people would be pointing, and tapping each other on the shoulder getting more people to look... Then I'd look over and be like, "what?".... heh, then people would approach me at school all the time like during football games and such.... ahhh the joys of highschool, how I don't miss it at all...

If you are not used to approach people, play around with some stuff. for example if you sit in a Café, play around with cards, do sum flourishes or whatever...or let objects levitate without caring about others. 80% of the time people will approach to YOU asking you stuff which can be easily brought to some more tricks.
and the other thing is just...go to them, ask them if they have a second for you blabla. works best for foreigners (japanese people are the nicest btw ;D they nearly always want to see it), older people or students (preferably student girls). I personally have the most success with student girls...maybe because I'm young and it acts cute ;D |

How do you tell who to approach and who to avoid? All that I know is to look for someone who doesn't look to be in a hurry and seems nice, relaxed and open to accept your performance. Any other suggestions?

They are the weak point in any crowd. If you get 1 or 2 kids laughing & clapping I promise, the onlookers will warm up to you like.....well, magic. Remember, you're not chained to a pitch like a busker, so if you see a prospective mark, follow along with him / them, and watch & listen to see if they would be good to perform for. Listen for them to say or do something which you can play off of. If it turns out you were wrong, simply return to your observation point. With adults try NOT to open with a card trick. Do something with a commonplace object (NOT a coin) like a bill-routine, or penthru. After that trick goes over good, THEN you can break out your bible & do some pasteboards.
Everybody wants to beleive.....we just help them along.

Sometimes it's being brave enough to do it. My wife thinks I'm crazy but one thing I just love doing is walking into a hood. These guys are stone cold and looking tuff. The look in their eyes just smacks with "your not welcome here". A couple of really great illusions and these tough guys let the child back out for awhile. You can really get a double bang for your buck if your a gospel magician.

Another way to get them to come to you, would be to just stand around in a busy area and start doing some cool visual flourishes. Someone will be bound to follow their curiousity and ask if you do magic. Then wow them with the killer visual stuff and more will come. This has and still works for me many times. Just try it. You don't even have to talk to anyone at first. Just keep to yourself doing your flourishes and they will arrive shortly. Give it a try sometime.

If you mess around with a deck of cards while sitting in a Restaurant, particularly in the USA, I guarentee you that 4 out of 5 Waitresses will ask you if you are doing tricks.
It's partly because they genuinely would like to see one (everyone loves a free show) and partly because as waitresses they know that if they can get chatting to you about ANYTHING they'll get a bigger tip. I've also seen this work in other countries. If you are looking to get a bit of experience showing magic to strangers never pass up an opportunity like a restaurant. Who knows when you might be coming back asking to table hop. -MM |

I like this method. I go to a table where there is a beer cap. Or a plant it there. Then I ask if I can get it ? They usually look at me a little weird. Then I say. Thanks. I all know you can get money for bottles. But just don't know how to get money for caps. And I Use the raven effect from the table to get money on the table and the cap dissapear.
Then thay ask.. How do you do that.. I say I am a magiacian. Then they say.. Do it again. And I say .. No but I have another trick I think you will like ANd the show is on |

I believe that the biggest problem with people doing magic is starting a performance. Its like riding a bike: Once you get the hang of it, you do it all the time.
You just need to put yourself out there! |

You just have to go up to them and ask if they have a second. then state that youve been practicing some card sleights that you learned on your voyage to india while riding cammelback... or whatever your opening line may be. pretending like your filming yourself... ummm. I would rather just say 1 sentance so they would know what I'm doing. just go to them.
