Suspenders? vests? Bright colored tee-shirts?
Be careful of looking just plain silly http://www.funnymagic.com/Resources/oops.jpg http://the-light.com/mens/6/full/vest.jpg I wish I could find some of the outfits I went out with early on. Go shopping and find something hip (right now), or something that is a very specific costume. Things that run in the middle can just be confusing to the audience. Just one man's opinion. Which means you have to work harder and faster than most to attract and hold a crowd, since walking people have short attention spans and need to be psychologically 'grabbed' to halt their progress and make them notice you. Steve

Excuse me guys....but isn't it everyone with the Bowler hat and vest also copying Gazzo? I mean there are some threads in these section about copying Gazzo stuff, but everybody and their brother is doing the Bowler hat, the vest and the oranges with the melon.
I guess is OK if we just change the color of the hat, the vest and the type of oranges???? There is some food for thought and let's be a little more original people. There are a thousand of other alternatives out there. Gazzo is great, but he is the one, let's look for other alternatives and stop being Gazzo wannabes. |

Reminds me of the guys who started wearing a fedora when Harry Anderson was doing his comedy club act.
And the friend of mine who wore his hair long and grew a mustache so he would look like Doug Henning. It was purely unintentional, but when I set out do do Merlin, I didn't copy anyone's costume. I just did it. I wasn't really trying to be original. I guess I just wanted people to spot me at a distance. This is not easy to do if you are short and fat.

The character that you see in my avatar was conceived out of necessity. I have worked a month-long Halloween gig for the past 5 years. Year one was on stage with two other acts and life was good... in fact too good. We drew such a crowd that the haunted house area bottlenecked later at night when everyone realized they hadn't gone in yet.
Year two: Management asks me to do strolling magic to keep the crowd spread out and draw more to the end where the haunted house entrance is. Nice that they think I am capable of that, but I'm thinking, "I have to do close-up strolling in virtual darkness among an average of 2500 people." Figuring I was going to all but disappear in that environment, and assuming that kind of ineffectiveness would get me the boot the following year, I put together this strange character that really set me apart from the norm. It worked and the look stuck. I use it and slight variations of it in most all except the snooties and the corporate gigs (and even then when they want that character). It's a visual draw. The last two years at the Halloween gig, I have been back on stage, and do the strolling between shows just for kicks. It's fun to try and pull off a circle show in that harsh environment... monsters scaring people away during the show, people's tour numbers getting called, etc. Gives you thick skin! ~michael

If you have to use a bowler, any chance of adding the big watch and sequinned cloth so you get the image of the aliens in some Lost in Space episodes?

It is very difficult to come up with a hat that someone else either isn't currenty using or hasn't used before. Bob Sheets used a jester hat. Several of us have used top hats. Gazzo uses a bowler.
How about a leather pilot's cap from WW I? How about a football helmet? Doughboy's helmet? A Balmoral? One of those hats, tall, furry, guards, for the use of, that the Buckingham Palace Guards wear? There is the Aussie outback hat. There are pirate hats. There are tricorn hats. Military shakos, the Fez, the list goes on and on.

One of the guys I saw at Le Double Fond years ago wore leathers and a full coverage motorcycle helmet to do multiplying billiard balls with attitude. Kind of looked like RoboCop. Fun!

I know he used a turban. That was to hide the e********.
Since nobody is working the street wearing one now, as far as magicians are concerned, it would be something different.

Watch some of the Street Magic and Street Theatre videos and count how many others wear Bowlers. It seems to be part of the standard uniform. In Gazzo's earlier days he wore a Fedora. Coincidentally, so did Harry Anderson. Was one trying to copy the other? Not likely.

It seems to be part of the standard uniform. I don't agree at all. It seems to be part of all the gazzo wannabes or at least 90% of them. Gazzo is succesful in the streets and he wears the hat, and wears the pouch. 90 to 95% of the people is copying him. Is it good? Is it bad? Do I care for Gazzo? All these answers had nothing to do with it, but at least you can accept the fact that lots of people is copying this "persona" for the streets, plain and simple, and lots of them are reading this right now. |

In The Art of Krowd Keeping, there are 18 photos of Gazzo working in a snap brim hat or a fedora. There are two posed pictures of him wearing a bowler.
In Krowd Keeping, there are 20 photos of Gazzo working in a snap brim hat or a fedora. There is one drawing of him working in a bowler. On the magicpitch.com there are not many photos of Gazzo at all. Conclusion: None, except that I think people are making more of this than they should.

Are people copying his persona or is this the persona/genre that just works best for the streets? Why don't you see people busking in a suit? A suit just wouldn't seem to fit the venue. |

Street conjurers were wearing pouches before any of us were on this planet. Gazzo was by no means the first one to wear a pouch and a vest. Jonny Fox worked in a pouch and a vest. He also wore trousers and shoes, which Gazzo wears. Does this mean that Gazzo copied Jonny? No.
Very few street workers can carry off Gazzo's material the way he does it. It is too much a part of him. It won't fit the rest of us. You really can't copy his persona. There are people who do busk wearing something that resembles a suit. It works for them.
