I have this trick. Does anybody else? Does it seem strange to you that when you're apparently showing the card case completely unfolded that there is an entire extra surface that shouldn't be there. Think about it -- if you unfold a card box, there would only be 2 of the large surfaces, but in Sudden Deck there are three.
Any thoughts? |

Sudden Deck by David Regal is a a fantastic opener to a card routine. It is a bit pricey but definitely you will use!

I saw it performed by David Regal before I bought it. You don't notice anything unusual because no one (except a magician) has experience with the inside of a card box. It is unlikely anyone would reconstruct it b/c when the deck appears, you've already moved into the next effect.

Pricey? Isn't it like less than $30.00? How cheaply do magicians expect these guys to make up this stuff for?

It is amazing how much of stuff like this flies right by the spectator. It almost flies by many magicians the same way.

Don't get me wrong -- I use it and it WORKS. I'm just really surprised by the blatant discrepancy and how it goes unnoticed. I was partly wondering if any performers were even aware of the "built-in" flaw that flies over the heads of spectators. It's one of those things that is right "in your face" but somehow overlooked.
Thanks for your thoughts! |

Here are some thoughts...
http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......orum=109 http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......orum=109 http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......orum=109 Yes, most performers know about it, and had you searched for "sudden deck" you could have easily found that information out. |

There are 2 ways around the discrepancy, from David and from Doug Edwards which fix this perfectly.....

Daegs,
Why the attitide? Had I not started this thread, then Frostgale and R.T might not have been made aware of the effect. There's no harm in asking a simple question. |

If you are worried about the discrepancy, I have a vague recollection of Stephen Tucker having an identical effect (and very nearly identical method) on a VERY early videotape.
Steve's version, as I remember, the gimmick that held the cards pivoted from one side to the other, so no extra surfaces were seen. Fooled the **** out of me. Cheers, Liam. |

I use it in my show when I get to my first card trick. I'm still baffled as to how/why the discrepancy goes unnoticed. It's really fascinating.

I've only been on this forum about a year (well... maybe two). But, I have noticed the same subjects popping up again and again. And, I've noticed that the same people keep answering the same questions, in order to help educate a lot of the newer folks to magic. Surely they get tired of this.
I do think it's a good idea to search before asking just to make sure that you're not bringing up something that's been covered before. However, in this case perhaps it doesn't apply. Back to the subject... "Sudden Deck" is a fabulous opener for a card routine, in my opinion. I wouldn't worry about the discrepancy at all. Some of the best magic effects contain discrepancies. Just my opinion, Robert |

I used it this morning. I was more aware of the extra flap than ever before (due to this discussion), yet the audience was definitely caught off guard when I pulled the cards from the "empty" box.

Daegs,
As per normal, you have a point. I just think you could have made your point in a less harsher manner. Take care buddy, Logan P.S. To whoever stated the 'holier than thou' statement, just want you to know that I too notice that trend in behaviour and I don't think it's pretty - In no way is this in relation to you Daegs!
