I would say Bills from Nowhere is a great trick for the street...I usually use a coin though...

I would say the 2 card monte is a great effect, as well as Double Thought Projection and Invisible Deck.
But, you still have to deal with the police and the whole gambling issue. First time I did street magic... I was doing really well until I started Color Monte, at which point a friendly (no sarcasm... he really was) cop came up and broke up the act.

I'm definitely an old style street magician. I like a little variety too. I bring them over with a little kinetic juggling or fire eating/breathing and jump into rings or cups and balls or some silk magic. I just make sure it's stuff everyone can see. I want a lot of good entertainment, three or four tricks and then the hat is passed. Short, sweet and visual.

I would think that any of the Monte variations (or other effects that simulate betting games (Va City Shuffle, et al) make a very poor choice for street work.
1. You could easily attract the attention of the cops, and the hassle of explaining yourself (and watching the crowd disperse while you do). 2. You may lose prospective specs because THEY misunderstand your motives. I doubt anyone has ever perceived sponge bunnies as gambling, for example. There are so many other things you can do that can't be mistaken for illegal activity, why put yourself in the position? |

I use a jumbo version of my own Mirror Monte all the time when I'm doing street work and have never had any problem.
It is so clearly NOT a scam that no one ever feels threatened or that it's illegal. Again, we're in the area of audience management here, where it's the performer's personality that can win (or lose) the crowd. But, on the other hand, if you feel uncomfortable doing this, then for goodness' sake, don't do it! You can't give your all if you don't believe in what you are doing in the first place. And working the streets, you either give your all -- or you starve! cheers, Peter Marucci showtimecol@aol.com |

I don't know if you're still seeking input at this point, being that I stumbled upon this much after the fact, BUT...
Any trick can potentially work on the streets, it depends upon how you do it. What is best, is to take those tricks that you feel confidant of and start working immediately. That is the whole point to working out there -- learning. You can't learn if you ain't doing. And putting your butt on the line will give you the knowledge and confidence to take whatever feedback you get in your hat, assess, edit, change yourself and your show accordingly. That's what it's about. The question isn't "what tricks work on the street," cause anything will work there. The question is, "what are you supremely confidant of" cause otherwise, you're going to feel real foolish trying to perform some ring routine that somebody(?) said would work out there in the cold, hard world (nothing against ring routines here, just an example). The point is, do that voodoo that you do so well! |

I agree that monte effects are all about management of the audience.
As for them looking like a scam, the exact same argument could be made for cups and balls. Oh, and I think sword through neck, needle through balloon, and linking rings are my favorite street effects. |

I like 2 Card Monte, coin bite, and King Rising (my own self-levitation).
Personally, I don't do street magic so I just took some tricks related to street magic that I use in my restaurant work. -Corey

Street magic is good because it looks unprepared. Try to use street elements in your routines. Napkins you find in a dumpster. Card to McDonalds hamburger-box. Card behind car window.

I use a lot of rope stuff. Not much cut and restore, as littering looks bad, but a lot of Sands ideas, as well as Tabary and Sanders... Plays big, and you can get the audience involved very easilly...

Anything from the Cellini DVD "Magic that can be done anywhere".
The loop ball is very visual and the angles aren;t too bad. The coins from the air after vanishing in a handkerchief is killer too at the right time or the right show is on the same DVD. I also use Sankey's Paperclipped as an opener and I get the audience engaged watching the "prediction card" with the paperclip on it. I used to do the Rings, a crash and link routine that is kind of open ended so I can move around and engage the audience as I link and unlink in a flash or a crash. I now usually do Gazzo's cups and balls as my closer, using Gazzo cups, and a pouch he made for me. He is still funnier than I am, but his routine plays great even if I do it. Doctor Cognos

Sorry on that last post, I forgot to give credit to Chris Capehart for most of the ring routine... I still use it a lot when very small crowds are all that can be had, and I use the cups and balls for bigger crowds.
