Hey everyone. I know there is a whole lot of talk here about cups. I've done my research, and many people love the Sherwood cups.
I am thinking of buying these cups, and I wanted to hear straight foreward from you guys how you like/dislike them. Necessities: Good for close-up and parlour They need to hold up for a while (i tap my cups, and stack them, but no slamming) Look professional Functional Thanks a lot guys! this is a big descision. If you guys have another suggestion of cups that you think are better, feel free to suggest but I don't want to pay more than $300. Again, Thanks!!!

Jim Riser has cups in that range
Gary Animal has cups in that range Cellini cups are in that range JES cups are in that range I've never seen Jim Riser's larger cups but they are supposed to be just grand. Riser cups are compact for their load capability. Only one bead. I like the look of two. I do own 2 sets of the Animal Cups. They are imperfect but look like paul fox cups. These are my working cups. I like the look of these better than the others. The cellini cups are kind of wobbley and don't take 3 balls on top. Nice look though and feel great in your hands. These were my working cups. No cup tips back with the wand better than these. The sherwood cups look good. bigger than paul fox. I wish the beads were closer together a la Paul Fox cups. Design is supposed to be fantastic. I for one, believe it. JES Cups are in that range but are hard to come by. I own a set of these too. Too Small for me. Frank

I own a set of the Brass Sherwood cups and find them a joy to use in a close-up or formal parlour setting.
I think they'll be a good investment for your performing neccesities. Brass is a harder metal than copper, but the look is upto the individual. The Cups I use the most are Gazzo cups though, and can't recommend them highly enough. Kindest Regards DAK |

Magicmaven, the Gazzo "Babe" cups are very nicely sized. Larger than standard, and will hold a baseball. If you can find them, the "Love" cups are the next size smaller and they will take a tennis ball.
I wouldn't hesitate to bang on the Gazzo cups all day long. I'm not sure I could bring myself to do that with the Sherwoods.

I understand, but: I am not going to bang on the cups-- this is not a street performance really, it is a formal setting. I have allways felt ( and maybe this is wrong) that load the biggest load that can fit in the cup. If I was to go for the Babes, or bigger, than I would feel obligated toload baseballs/oranges. I also feel very uncomfortable loading baseballs/oranges from my back pockets/holders. I really don't want to use a pouch, as they are just not my character with the Cups and balls.
Thanks for the help though, and if you have any critiques in my thinking about the final loads, then feel free to comment on them. Thank you

You did say "tapping" didn't you... I'd at least go for a wooden rather than a metal tipped wand. Those Sherwoods are just too pretty to risk dinging them.

Weight has nothing to do with it. It has to do with the relative hardness of the two metals coming together and the velocity.

If I take a little diamon, put on a table, and take a little hammer, and hammerr the diamond(not too hard) the diamond will crush.

The Sherwood coppers are great. Those are my worker cups at the bar. But private or special shows I pull out the silver sherwoods.

I own copper sherwoods. Great cups, good size and holds a good load, but not "big" cups. They hold a deceptively large load.
Don't worry about tapping them. I do the cup thru cup forcefully with them all the time with absolutely no ill-effect on the cups.

The Sherwood copper & brass cups are a fantastic design and they handle beautifully.
The other cups you should seriously consider are those made by Gary Animal. Gazzo has started to market these in the US though his website Magicpitch. The 'Babe' cups will just take a baseball. If you're worried about filling your pockets with baseballs, you should have a look at Gary's 'Love' cups which take a tennis ball. I haven't seen the 'Love' cups on Gazzo's website, but you could e-mail to ask if he's going to be stocking them in the future. All of the Gazzo/Gary Animal cups are high quality heavy cups that handle really well. Richard

I have to voice an opinion here as well. I have been the recent recipient of both gold/silver Sherwoods, and smooth copper Sherwoods. I am not exagerrating a bit when I tell you that the smooth copper are every bit as much a joy to use as the gold/silver. I use the copper as my 'worker' cups, and when I was in the process of deciding on a smooth set, I had the choice of brass or copper. I e-mailed Brett, asking him about his copper. The reason I wanted them was because of the beautiful rose color that the copper has. He told me not to worry about the durability of the copper, because the alloy used makes them as durable as his brass. Having used them for a few weeks now, I can tell you that he was correct. Using the Sherwoods as workers, (I don't SMASH them together, but use them as you described) there is not a mark on the cups. I not only highly recommend them but would encourage you to purchase the Sherwoods. Beautiful cups, beautiful balance, and they are a joy to use. They nest so tightly there is not so much as a jiggle if that is an issue for you. Go for it!

I have five (5) sets of Sherwood cups. You can see them at the cups and balls museum. This is the one cup that ALL of the cup manufacturers have said is THE best cup on the market.
1) They hold a tennis ball. That's a bigger load than a Paul Fox cup will hold. 2) You can do the elevator move and the rollback with them. 3) They are actually quite strong. The copper cups are workhorses. The metal is annealed properly and not likely to split on you. This can be a problem with some other cups. I know Jim Riser is also careful about this. I have had a special wands made to use with these cups. These wands do not have metal ends.

Thanks Bill. I have heard fabulous thing about these cups, there is no problem with the quality, now it just comes down to will the hold up... That is good that they can do the elevator, as it is common in my routine.
Tomarro I will see them. Pete Biro is showing my his...

When you see them, I think you will understand why I think they will hold up. Of course there are many variables. After all, you can mess anything up if you really work at it!
If I were going to be doing street magic, I would probably go with the Gary Animal cups -- one of the three models. I have Gary's own set, and it has seen a lot of abuse. But it is still useful. Also, considering how many sets of cups I have that were made of thinner copper, and how well they have held up over the years, I would put the Sherwood smooth copper among the tougher cups. Jim Riser's cups are pretty tough, too. The last time I talked to Mike Brazill, we both considered that we are living in the "golden age of cups and balls."

OK, not that I have much more to add after Bill's posts, but this is just my opinon. (Whatever that's worth.) If I have a gig outside, or anything where there might be kids around, I use my Riser cups. They are a good solid worker cup. I do not bang, but tap them moderately and they hold up great, no marks whatsoever. I use my silver Sherwoods only for private parties or when people come to my home and want to see something. At my restaurant gig, I occasionally use my Riser mini cups. I carry them in a small velvet bag that came from the Ghiradelli chocolate company. I'm seriously considering a set of brass or copper Sherwood smoothies to round out my collection. I really prefer the look of copper with a nice patina, but there's nothing like a brass cup that "rings" when tapped with a wand. Johnson cups are also great for the money. I think people have forgetten a bit about them over the last few years with all the other great cups out now. Good luck in your decision.
I forgot to post this about the wands I use. I have a mercury wand from Ammar and a few homemade models that have small modifacations. This is what I use for more informal shows with the Riser cups. For my Sherwoods, I use a Porper wand which is beautiful, and does not have metal tips. For my Riser mini cups, I use a mini brass wand that I got from Doug Malloy. It's great, but a little too small to spin. Brett has been teasing many of us for a long time that he is designing his own wands and I'm very curious to see them. At WMS I saw some Thomas Wayne wands and WOW! They are beautiful. |
