I was in Vegas a few weeks ago and picked up my first cups and balls set from Houdini's Magic Shop at Caesar's. It is the Empire Aluminum cups and balls. And one of the cups was a chop cup! I got the set for $26.00. It came with a basic routine for the cups and balls, but no routine for the chopcup. I am new to the cups and balls and chopcup. Any suggestions on routines, books, or videos that have chopcup routines?
Thanks! ~jbguy~ |

If you plan on getting serious, get the Ammar book, or the Gazzo book. The videos
are better but kind of spendy. Ammar is very good with the misdirection. Also Cellini material. All three know what they are doing. Check for chop references in the ads, some don't cover it.
...think not that all wisdom is in your school. You may have studied other paths, but, it is important to remember that no matter who you are or where you come from, there is always more to learn.

Hi.
Two must-have. Ammar "The complete book of cups and balls" gives a *quite* complete review of the moves that can be used in the C&B routines, and very clearly and visually explained. Two routines (Ammar and Vernon ones) are included. I wrote *quite* complete because in my opinion in the "Eddie Joseph on cups and balls" you find more. But this is quite an old book, and so the moves are not so detailed explained. I am not English mother tongue, but really some time I felt I was inventing a new move instead of doing what the book teach. And dozens of routines are included. Material is more difficult, in my opinion. I am still looking for the Frank Garcia "The very best on cups and balls". That means I do not know the book AND THAT SOMEONE HAS GOT IT AND WANTS TO SELL IT I AM WILLING TO BUY!!! Sorry for screaming, but I think I looked everywhere and asked everyone. Routines on C&B are found here and there. Aldo Colombini has a very entraitaning one. Tommy Wonder a nice routine with two cups and sponge balls. Very nice routines I saw are with only one cup, which is a glass covered by newspaper. In my opinion they are nice because you are able to show the ball has arrived without removing the cup, but just lifting the newspaper cover. Seeing the ball trapped inside the glass can drive to a stronger effect. In a different thread you may find a routine with FIVE cups (two gaffed), which I found beautiful as it reminds me to the beginning of C&B in theatre (not in street), to the end of 1800, to Bartolomeo Bosco. But at last I have developed my own routine not because i think it is better than others, but because I feel it more fitting to my way. No resources on Chop Cup. I have not found a routine that satisfies me, and so I did not find (yet) a starting point for working on. Cheers Stefano Stefano Mambretti |

I don’t have the Ammar book but I have the videos. They are an excellent resource on the cups and balls.
Mark Wilson has a good basic routine in his course on magic book and I think it’s seen on his video course volume 4. Danny Hustle mentioned that Gazzo is releasing his full workings on the cups and balls soon. That is the one I’m waiting for. |

My favorite Cups and Balls routine is on a number of Patrick Page videos. It has what many routines lack -- an easy-to-follow plot.
Dan Fleshman has the best ending of all of the routines, but it helps to be seated or working with a servante. Check with stevensmagic.com, maybe they have it in a booklet or on tape. As for the Chop Cup, I like the Don Alan routine. It's on his Stevens tape. |

I'm still looking for that perfect Chop Cup routine. Oh wouldn't it be great - so much potential !!
I think my best reference is "The Chop Cup Book" c 1979 by Mark Wilson. Combine these routines / ideas with "The best of cups & balls" c 1979 by Frank Garcia and Ammars Cups and Balls book/video, and I think you're set to go a long way. Good luck |

To tropicalpenguin,
The Chop cup is a special cup designed for doing a cups and balls type of routine but using just one cup. It was invented by the late Al Wheatley who worked professionally under the name of Chop Chop. It has a built in gimmick which allows you to show a ball under the cup which has been shown empty just moments before. The clever gimmick is invisible, and the cups can even be examined by the spectators. The Cups are most often made in metals like aluminum, copper, stainless steel and brass. But they have also been made in many other materials: ceramic cups (like tea cups and coffee cups), Plastic, Wood, leather, and more. Wheatley sold thousands of the cups in aluminum, primarilly because the effect was popularized by Don Alan who performed it often on television, at magic conventions, and in his private engagements. But Wheatley's first cup was made in Bamboo.

In http://www.allmagic.com you can find an interesting routine with a wooden chop cup. I feel it's very good, because the chop cup is used in a conceptually different way.

I did not see the 'The Chop Cup Book' published by Mark Wilson Productions in 1979.

Mit de "Fertigen Fingers", do you mean the sex education routine or the Cup & Ball routine with variations on old time, newbie, jaded performer, or future robot. Both are great, but I loved the variation version.
