I know and can perform the Balducci self-levitation. But to levitate objects? How is it done?
Any advice will be brilliant. Florian |

Depends on what you're trying to levitate.
There are several different methods, and the best method is dependent on both the object and the situation and surroundings you are performing in. But remember, users of the Magic Cafe will only point you in the direction of resources (books to read, videos to watch, tricks to buy), but will not reveal secrets just for the asking.

Sounds like you're looking for an I.T.R., which your favorite magic supply dealer should be able to set you up with.
You should also get a good book or video showing the proper use of one. On the other hand, I would be wary of doing levitation effects on the street. It's just too easy for too many things to go wrong.

yes, its true street levitations are difficult, but if you are able to pull them off the results are definetly worth the risk

do you think levitation are any good at all? Or do you think maybe animations and pk effects are more creible aswell as more misderecting people? I am doing a bill levitation with IT,but I am trying to head myself towards different efects..People just wont buy it that you can make things levitate. Any idea? Cordially

I agree with Philemon that what you're looking for is an I.T.R. I would recommend impressing coins into foil and cutting them out for levitation to cut out problems with the heavy handling. For fellow sufferers of Lite Flite and U.F.O. and related tricks, you know how frustrating reset can be!

And one that should be considered more often and more seriously. IMO, we are deluding ourselves if we think that spectators don't know or suspect the method when bills, credit cards and various other pocket trash are floating (dangling) around for minutes on end. Maybe they can't SEE the gaff or, in better iterations of the effect, work out the details of the hookup, but they KNOW it is there on a logical and emotional level (even more so now that these kinds of effects are being sold to the mass lay market as a $20 alternative to a Svengali Deck). If you want a sobering experience in this regard, spend an afternoon or evening outside one of the Houdini or other magic shop outlets in Las Vegas and listen carefully to the onlookers whilst the demo guy slings around a UFO or some other IT flavor of the month. I would encourage you to follow your intincts towards more subtle effects involving relatively tiny movements of inanimate objects. The emotional impact is FAR stronger than levitation effects, particularly if it is made to seem DIFFICULT and unpredictable. I have held groups captivated and breathless for twenty minutes waiting for something to happen, encouraging me when I apologize for failing and urging me not to give up, and when the moment finally arrives--TEARS from women in the group. Just my opinion. |

The weather is your biggest concern and if you have ever used any kind of IT outside you will know that the first breeze that comes through will leave your bill dancing as if it were on a string. I avoid thread on the street like the plague. A PK setup, now that might be interesting. I will admit I have used Finn Jonn loops to animate a spoon during a bend routine but I would never float anything on the street. It is dodgy at best. Only when you yourself believe you are floating something will the audience believe. As for floating, the ITR is the easiest method to levitate anything and if you get an ITR (as James already stated) don't settle for anything less than an original Sorcery Shop version - there are some cheap ITRs coming out of India that don't hold up for jack. If a magic shop tries to sell you one of these, just explain it's a piece of junk and that you'll hold out till you can find a SS reel. Also on the subject of reels, I recommend the full size one - not the popular micro-reels. They seem to be easier to reset and less likely to snap. I personally prefer the old fashioned method, look for Michael Ammar's Floating Bill. It's available in booklet and video. No matter what hookup you go with, be prepared to put in the rehearsal. It is easy to make something hang from a string, it takes hour of practice to create the illusion something is floating.

A warning on the ITR:
What looks invisible from your angle may be visible as a sore thumb from someone else's. Invisible thread shows up quite well when light hits it from a specific angle (like a spider's web). Outdoors you have virtually no control over your lighting conditions. Steve Steve

I wouldn't recommend the sorcery shop reels. The best reel on the market is Mark Allen's TM (Thread Manager). It has super invisible thread that will stand the closest scrutiny even under florescent lights.

Good point xaratax.
Levitation, while impressive in any guise, is still in the realms of fantasy in the minds of most people. If not presented properly, it is seen as just another trick. PK however, mind movement, is in the mind of laypeople - plausible. Uri Gellar and other phenomenon has trained the minds of the masses to believe that such things might be possible. If you can recreate these effects, that's real magic. |
