Clairvoyant Cassette (Dick Barry:
Any member of the audience is requested to merely think of a card. A spectator is then asked to remove a sealed envelope from the magician's pocket. The envelope contains a cassette tape, which then reveals the name of the mentally selected card! Dai Vernon wrote: "I cannot think of a more valuable effect to add to any type of performance, mental or standard." (Use your own recorder.) This illusion is a P.C.A.M Trophy Winner. This is the info from Barry's site. I understand this was also included in his lecture notes. The principle used in supposedly in print for other effects. The card is just mentally thought of by the spectator and then when the cassette is played the chosen card is announced on the cassette tape. Any ideas where this type of info is available in print from books or other sources. Do you have any thoughts on on this effect from Dick Barry? Steve

This was one of the earliest "tape recording reveals a mentally chosen card" effects from WAY back. And, in my estimation, it is great. In fact, I just recently bought another set of special cards for it as my were literally worn from use.
Unfortunately, the new ones are NOT as nearly well done as the old ones, but they still work fine, if you know the principle. I've never had the pleasure of seeing Dick Barry do it, but it sure plays for me. I had the tapes transferred to those little mini-tapes and use a tiny recorder, which makes it much more portable. My recorder is an Olympus and is about the size of a deck of miniature Bicycle cards. It plays well because it uses a well-known gag for finding a card that is merely thought of but, after the moans and groans, you really do accomplish the feat, actually predicting a second mentally selected card with the recording. Way back when I first did this, and it wasn't so well known, I never met one magician who knew how it worked, on the occasions that some attended my performances (which they often did at various colleges.) Now, it is somewhat well known, but still an effective close-up mental item. |

Dick's site states any card can be named. Cassettes are things of the past so will a pocket size digital recorder work for this effect. From the demo a woman is selected to come on stage and she then picks somone from the audience to mentally think of a card. The the envelope is opened and the cassette is played and the selected card is on the cassette. I have a pocket sized olympus digital recorder that would be much easier to use instead of the cassette player. Runawayjag would this work instead of the cassette? In your post above about special cards in this effect that was demo'd no cards were used the spectator just though of a card. What other effects are on the market similiar to this one by Dick Barry?

Any card that they SEE. It's a great trick. Worth the money. I love the idea of using the mini tapes. Great thinking.

No, ANY card cannot be named and, if the demo just showed someone come up and think of a card, it is not an accurate demo, at least not of the original Clairvoyant Cassette that I have which came directly from Dick Barry. I have not seen the demo.
The impression perceived by the audience is VERY strong that any card is merely thought of. In fact, I've never had anyone suggest otherwise. It is a case of any card they SEE, but that description, although unintentional, does a little disservice to the effect. I don't want to give too much away, but I also don't want anyone to have the impression that there is a deck in play and the spectator is asked to name any card he SEES. That is not the case. It is much more clever and subtle than that. It is a very well thought out routine (not just a trick,) and it is evident in the presentation that it has been used in real world conditions extensively by the originator. It's kind of like the Ball and Vase is a trick; the Cups and Balls is a routine. Mentally speaking, B'Wave is a trick; Clairvoyant Cassette is a routine. It's not something you'll just pull out and do; it would be a part of (and probably a highlight of) your show. Hope that helps a little. |

Check out dickbarrymagic.com for the demo and ordering info. To further answer Cody's question: sometimes the spectator can simply name a card. However the audience is always left with the impression that any card could have been named. It's a great effect.

Based on the demo any card can be thought of. The lady thought of the jack of clubs on the demo and this is what was on the cassette tape. I have found out that this is included on his lecture notes. The effect sells for 35.00 and his notes listed on his site Magic Class sells for 25.00. He also had notes earlier that were cheaper if you can find them. The notes explain this particular trick. Anyway here is the link to the demo. Scroll down and find the Clairvoyant Cassette and watch the demo and tell me what you think. Maybe this particular demo was set up. But based on what I see the spectator was told they had a free choice of any of the 52 cards. Do you think a stooge was used for this demo?

There was no stooge. This is exactly what the effect will look like sometimes.

Just found out from Paul at Hocus Pocus that he purchased the remaining CLAIRVOYANT CASSETTES from Dick Barry this past weekend at the Magic Castle Swapmeet. I didn't even know this thing was still around before I saw this thread. Great update, btw, runawayjag!

Okay, I just watched the video and there is no stooge. It IS the same as the old one. Now, don't misconstrue what I say here. Let me make it clear: it is a GREAT trick. But, just be forewarned, it does not always come out as shown on the demo video. More frequently than not, but not always. Even if it does not come across exactly as shown, it is STILL a killer effect and will fool them badly. Just wanted to clear up my earlier statement about a description of the video. One last time, so I don't get emails, I think it is a GREAT trick.

Runawayjag, what do you mean by "not always". Will there be a miss? Do you have to change your routine to lead up to the correct revlelation? I am not fishing for methods here. Just want to know how's the effect like when its not going to be like what's in the demo.

No, there is NEVER a miss. Okay, let me think how to put this without tipping too much. The outcome will ALWAYS be what you saw on the demo video. The process to get there may not be quite exactly as what you saw. Often it is exactly what you saw, but not always. Nevertheless, the effect will be just as strong. Hope that helps a little.

The spectator can name any card right?
No limitation or force right? |

The demo showed the performer asking the audience to just think of any card.
That seems like a free choice. In real life performance, is that what is going to happen? Just any card thought? How limited are the choices? Cos I looking to repeat performances. |

NOTE from DICK BARRY: I have received several e-mails recently asking if I still have my CLAIRVOYANT CASSETTE in stock. I sold the last I had to Hocus-Pocus Magic. I understand they are sold out. I do not plan on making anymore at present. The effect and gimmick that makes it work is in my book MAGIC WITH CLASS, which is still available. My newer version, using the same principal, is called "THE 52 ON 1 CARD MIRACLE". Thanks to all of you for your interest.
