About 35, and I watch them more than I practice the effects....

With all due respect, what is the importance or relevance of how many DVDs a person owns? Is there a prize or "bragging rights" to the person with the biggest (or smallest) collection? Just curious.
Mike P.S. What I'd really find more interesting and productive would be for a person to take one DVD from his collection and describe why and to list the reasons why, to him, this is one of the most valuable DVDs ever made. I have many DVDs and, on a scale of 1-10, I'd rate most of them 6 or below. For the money spent, IMHO, most are mediocre, at best, or are a hurriedly cobbled together pieces of crap, at worst, that are extremely deriviative and/or with very slight variations from the original(s) that they are plagiarizing. Aren't you beginning to get tired of the sentiments expressed in phrases such as "If you can find just one thing on the DVD that is worthwhile, then it justifies the price of the DVD"? I know that there are exceptions to these sentiments and I am hungry for the knowledge and input of others--of having them pick out such singular gems and expicitly state their position and defend their reasons for making such a selection. And please, none of the "Anything by XXXXXX" meaningless generalities. Sorry. Time to climb back down off of my soap box. (grin)

I have too many really. I also have a fair number of videos too. I should think about rationalising the collection, but most of them have something worthwhile on them - and some of them I'd never part with.
I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three. Elayne Boosler

I think it's up to each and everyone to spend their money to whatever they like without having to justify to a few, why they do so.

I'm an impulse buyer. I have 142 DVD's but actually only watched about 20.
I'm gonna wait till I retire and spend my golden years going through an entire closet filled with the DVD's and effects. Of course I may have to wait about 25 years. I hope they still make DVD players in 2030 |

BTW, if your post was directed against my recent post on this subject, you will note that I never criticised anyone for what they purchased or asked them to justify such purchases. Rather, what I attempted to convey was that knowing how many DVDs a person owned is irrelevant. Instead, what I suggested would be a more meaningful post would be for someone to highlight a DVD they really liked and explain why they liked that particular DVD. By doing this, a person could provide meaningful relevant information on the Café that could prove beneficial and helpful to the Café members. I was not asking a person to defend his purchases; rather I was asking them to share specific informantion on the "gems" they really liked and explain why they liked it/them.

I'm at about 100. Tip..make a notebook with the effects you would like to use and what DVD it is on. I've wasted way to much time going back trying to remember who did what.

Simple statement, yet great advice. I've lost a lot of time trying to find effects that I want to work on. And there are some that I've just totally forgotten about because I got interested in something else.

About 20 but still did not have sufficient time to get through. The worst is that watching DVDs is time spent without creativity. Afterwards you tend to replicate the DVD as you saw it instead of inventing your own handling / pattern... IMHO

I just got started in magic. Only about a month now. Already own 9 DVD's. I enjoy watching the performances as much, if not more than the actual explanations.
My wife enjoys watching them also. I'm afraid that with spending all this money, she's gonna make me vanish!! Mike |
