Hey there Scott, glad to have ya at the Café!!
I was just wondering what you would do in this situation. There is a 13 year-old magician that has been in magic for around 4 years, and has experience performing at school, strangers, whatever. I am not talking about the Svengalideckandtwentyonecardtrick type that some of you might have in mind. I am talking about a magician with some nice solid material. What step should he take next? The streets? Restaurants? Whatever? Just wanted your personal suggestion on this. Oh ya, and the magician in this little story is a member of these forums with a screen name known as "gngorick." |

Well, what's your final goal? To become a professional in the long run, to make some extra money now or just get performance experience?

Can I pick all three?

First off, if your school has a theatre program, I'd get involved. If not, try to find somewhere to get involved in the process of theatre. Learn about acting, directing, lighting, sound etc, This will put you light years ahead of most magicians.
I would also find places to do shows even if for free. The more you perform the better you get. Remember, free shows can lead to paying ones but please don't take paying gigs from pros. Make gigs for yourself. Try all types of magic from close up to stage. The more types of magic you can perform well, the more versatile you will be. Stay in school and try to get a decent college education, working at your craft in the process. Join a magic club or frequent a magic shop where you can bounce ideas off other magicians who may have valuable advice for you to absorb. But above all, have fun with it and realize that you not only represent yourself but all magicans. So when you do go out and perform in public...make sure all of your material is well practiced, polished and professional. Good Luck! |
