I have to agree with Paul I think 'pity applause' is an American thing. When I am performing at a club or party if I mess up (probably because I have taken too much advantage of my free bar tab) someone will usually say something. I am happier when I get spoken responses and laughing, rather than some clapping. Like when I did a one off kids party for a friend and I could hear the adults at the back whispering "How the hell did he do that," that made me feel happy. From this party I also found out that kids love spoon bending and mentalism.
