Hey there. My computer's been acting very strange over the past few weeks. I've tried a countless number of system restores, but it always ends up saying that the files couldn't be restored. I can get things to work fine in Safe Mode (with Networking). What happens is the internet, e-mail, word documents, and pdfs all work fine. If I double-click on anything else, the computer freezes. No other programs work. I have to be on Safe Mode to do things (except everything is enormous and discolored...). Anybody know how to fix this? If not, can anybody tell me how to do one of those master reset things...where your computer is reset to the original settings when you first get the computer, everything gone (I'm not familiar with this sort of stuff).
Thanks a ton. Daniel |

I have no idea what you problem is Daniel, but when things start locking up, memory is a good place to look. Check you temp file directory and see if it is too full. Check you disk size and see if it is also might be full.
If you can boot in safe mode, scan disk or disk doctor might show you something. Before making any changes, save all you can of your documents. Good luck.

Right Click on My Computer, go into Manage, then into Device Manager, remove your display adapter and then restart your computer. This worked for me when I had a simliar problem.
You could be having Interrup conflicts, While in Device Manager delete any yellow exclamination marks. That means the computer doesn't recognize that hardware. You might want to update some of your drivers if you updated windows. Just my thoughts here.

Thanks guys.
Under Display Adapter, did you just uninstall whatever you found there? I'm just wondering if I should delete this Intel(R)... (not the whole name). If I do, is there a way to get it back? |

Windows loads all drivers into memory you will not notice a change until you reboot Without the drivers, it will default to a windows driver, then look for compatable drives and load them in the right location.

If you're running into corrupted data, number one, I would try a defragmentation on your hard drive. This is under system tools in the accessories menu. What I would do if that doesn't fix the problem, is a complete reformat. I will write the steps below. (These may not be exact, they vary from OS to OS)
1. Insert your windows installer cd in the drive 2. Reboot - Watch for something while booting up that says press any key to boot from cd-rom. 3. then it should start loading setup files from the CD. Agree to the terms, then follow the process 4. You should come to a point where it asks you where to install..select your current partition (usually C:), and click install here 5. It will ask you what you want to do. Repair, reinstall, or reformat. 6. Choose reformat, it should say "THIS WILL DELETE ALL DATA ON PARTITION C:) Confirm your choice. 7. follow the steps from there. Make sure you backup everything you want to keep that you can access (do this before you follow the above steps) Forgive me if these steps aren't exact..it's been a long time since I've done a system reformat. I suggest looking it up on the web..theres lots of websites that will tell you how to do this too. OH AND MAKE SURE TO HAVE YOUR WINDOWS CD KEY WHEN YOU DO THIS!

DON'T Format our hard drive unless you absolutely have to! And make sure you've got all the disks you need to reinstall everything you use!
Backup all your data to CD or similar. Formatting the hard drive will wipe everything and you will be starting from scratch. Be very sure you need to do it as it is a drastic operation!

Sounds like spyware to me.
Get yourself a couple of spyware cleaners and run them. Clean out your internet cache and cookies as well as all your temp directories. If you're feeling brave look in the run section of your registry and see if there are any unwanted programs being started up in there. If you don't know how to do this then don't as it's real easy to make your system completely unusable by doing this wrong.
