I normally don't start posts here. After all, who am I? I'm just some doddering old magician. I don't do the flashy card tricks with all the flourishes and transpositions, etc. I'm happy with my Brainwave deck.
But something happened yesterday that made me think of all these new guys. I was practicing palming half dollars. I was carrying around five half dollars in my palm all day. I went out to get the mail and the mailman was loading the boxes. He handed me my mail and said, "Hey, are you the guy that gets all that magic stuff?" I told him I was. He said that he knew a magician when he was a kid that could produce quarters out of thin air. I asked him to hold my mail. I then used a technique that I learned from the Ammar Topit DVD. I produced one of the half dollars in my left hand for him. "Like this?" I asked. "Yeah!" Then, I took the coin from my left hand with my right and dropped it in my pocket. I opened the left hand again and there was another coin. "...Or this?" His mouth dropped open as I dropped that one in my pocket, "...or this?" I produced all five coins for him. He was speechless. I took my mail back from him and thanked him. As I turned and walked away I said, "Well, I can't do that trick, but I intend to learn it some day." Wanna feel like a 'real' magician? Be one. |

Nice story Tex .
I always thought that some of the best and most Magical Magic was when an opportunity such as yours comes along. You were only getting your mail and it was the Postman that brought up the subject in the first place. You just happened to be ready at the right time and the experience for the Postman was much more Magical to him than it would have been if you were to say "would you like to see some Magic?". I have always prefered to do Magic in what appeared to be an impromptu situation and was brought up by someone else, not by me. Thanks for sharing your story. Iven

One of the best ways to sell urself as a magician is by doing simple effects for people like the mailman, a waitress in the Café ur eating in, the gal at the counter at the dry cleaners, the people at the window at the post office, or the bank teller. I learned that from Mark Wilson, and has it ever paid off, simple things like color changing knife, or use a loop, or something like Sankey's chain link, etc. Simple little pocket effects, use coins, rope, string, whatever is convienent. Not only makes their day and makes friends, but I have gotten a lot of show offers off doing tricks like that for people. It gets ur name out there as a magician, better than most forms of paid advertising, and, like my fellow Texan above said, makes you feel like a "real" magician.

I coach little league baseball and after one game this week someone let their jacket in the dugout. It wasnt anyones on my team. Nobody claimed it and nobody wanted to bring it to the lost and found. As one of the boys held the coat and said "Here coach, you bring it to the lost and found, As I agreed, I proceeded to pull 20 dollar bills from the pockets of the jacket, 3 in all.
I've never seen kids jump at the chance to bring a lost items to the lost and found. The parents loved it and were really laughing. It's good to know magic. |

Excellent, unanticipated miracle Tex!
On my daily routine I don't carry anything special anymore. OK, maybe a couple of elastics. I used to carry three or four small, versatile 'tools' that could used for a few minor miracles. I can't do this where I work but when I go out I'll still pocket a couple of these 'tools' in case the subject of magic comes up or I think the situation will allow for a bit of magic. |

I always carry a couple of rubber bands with me and say to almost anyone..."excuse me but can you tell me how this can happen."...then I do the CMH....knocks em out every time.

Great story Tex! You remind me of me...going through my normal day palming coins. One day I was practicing my vent act while on a long road trip. As I drove with one hand, I used my other hand as the puppet. Well, there is this bit when we get into alittle argument. Suddenly, I felt as if someone was watching me...you know that feeling? I looked over and here was a family in their mini van....watching me argue with my hand. I cerainly DIDN'T feel like a magician THAT day..LOL

That is a good story. I love it when I just happen to be ready to do something that fits a comment someone makes like that. Those moments are rare but it's great when they come. Makes you wish other where around to see it happen. Just imagine if you happened to perform Dan Sylvester's Pitch routine. Those 5 coins would have turned into as many as you wanted to produce.
I'll just share a similar thing that happened to me. I was performing for kids in the hospital on Christmas Eve one year. After my show Santa came in to hand out presents. I noticed one little boy was sitting by himself and he didn't look to happy. I asked him what was wrong and he said he didn't get what he wanted from Santa. All he wanted was a ball. I just happened to have on one me (A final load for cups and balls) so I produced it from his ear and gave it to him. You should have seen his face light up. The bad news was that other kids started asking for foot balls and basket balls then pointing their ears at me.. Ron Jaxon |

I did this with the rope through body, I would go around at work with a rope in my pocket, and people would ask me to do something I would perform the rope through body and leave them in aw.

There are tons of tricks that look impromptu. With a little piece of cored clothesline you can borrow a ring and do Ring Off Rope (or the improved version, Off by Al Schneider)
A few coins and you have chink-a-chink Hey, with a few coins you could have a whole act. My point is, no matter where I am, if I am outside the house I am prepared to perform, even if it's just going out to get the mail. When I dress in the morning I pick out a couple of effects that I want to play with that day. |

In an earlier post I told of an impromptu Ring & Shoelace routine I did at a bachelor party. Both were borrowed.
Funny seeing this somewhat inebriated guy sitting on the floor removing his shoelace. Took him 5 minutes and the routine was only about 3. |
