Well....after my first performance with it on the 19th of May...it just may go up for sale. I'm thinking of going to a small wire mesh cage...still using Ian's CAP system and the hanging shakles so my hands can't touch together.
Any interested persons PM me, ok ? http://www.crateescape.5u.com ~Rick~ |

Awwwwwe, you guys...I love each and everyone of you !
Ok, here is the reason. As you all know, I'm a full time Mentalist and will soon start doing a lot of service club shows. My act is carried in a briefcase. I'm thinking of going to a wire mesh cage because of the weight and ease of transportation in a car or van. As well...The shackles will be attached to the inside of the cage and the audience will be able to see everything that is going on inside, right up to the end, just before the screen goes in front. My main concern is weight and size, especially since it will be in a lot of malls to generate interest to bring people to the service club booth to sell tickets. That crate I have is so solid and so well made...it wieghs at least 100 pounds and to be honest with you...will be a problem to transport to and from shows and mall promotions for me...call me lazy !!! LOL! The wire mesh is much, much, lighter and is......a cage ! The method of escape from the crate, is with Ian's CAP system...(never fail, fool proof and a ball to reherse with)...My wire mesh cage will use the same system of escape, after using the CAP system, I will never go to a gaffed hinge or lock or secret panel again. As with the crate, my shackles will be bolted into the cage in a way where my hands can't touch each other...once again, a McColl invention. It's a light weight, sensational escape and is perfect to close my first set in the show. If I was a "blood and guts" EA like Baker, Morg, Chance,The Pastor, etc. wild horses couldn't drag that baby out of my grasp ! But I am a Mentalist who is including an escape into his stage show as a visual effect as well as to use it in the malls to sell tickets. Please put your mind at ease...that crate is a prize in any EA's show...it's a beauty to work with, escape is lightning fast and it's fool proof...it's good to go ! Bless all of you for your concern...it really touched me....thanks guys. ~Rick~ |

Ah-Ha..the dreaded SIZE ISSUE! I feel for you rick. It stinks to have something you really enjoy but can't do often because it's just too *** big! I pine for the Table of Death, but even though the top breaks down the rest does not. It's a beast, you can't get it in a van and even with a truck you need a lift gate, fork lift or 4 really big guys.
I assume, then that the crate doesn't break down...not that it would help, 100 pounds is a 100 pounds flat or other wise. For what you want it for lighter is smarter. Besides, a man in a cage is sexier than a man in a box. LOL Ms.M

Oh Ms. M, I so know what you mean...I have longed for a Table of Death for so long!!! I was excited when the one appeared on Magic Auction until I started reading the description...it began with "Magician is shackled to two opposing winches underneath 750 pounds of spikes." Ok, sounds good...but man is that going to be heavy...then..."This illusion weighs over 2000 pounds with high point loads on the casters. This means that it will crush most hotel risers when you drop the spikes." Ok, that wouldn't be fun to haul around...so it looks like once again, no Table of Death for me! Of course the $22,000 opening bid was kind of a deterrent too....but man what a gorgeous looking escape! Here is the link in case others would like to salivate as well....

Rick, bummer about the crate. It looks so great too. Although I have to admit, the cage idea is a winner too.
Can't wait to see the pics of it. Ros

I use my "too big" sub-trunk as a packing crate, so it's size doesn't matter much. My trunk lid folds over against the back of the box. If I am not carrying curtains etc., I flip the lid over and put the box in the back of my van with the opening to the rear. I then load it up. I wish it were smaller, but I live with it.

I have never seen a performance of the "Table of Death", but is there any reason why it couldn't be constructed of lighter material (ie., wood) painted to resemble metal?

Yeppers...size and weight...! That's why I retired my Iron Maiden Escape in the late 1970s. When I was doing night clubs and county fairs, I hauled my act in my Toyota SR-5 pick-up.
I now drive a Chevy Cavalier. Steve

Well, I've come to my sences...I'm going to keep the packing crate. My cabinet maker is going to cut a foot off the length, 4 inches off the width, and 3 inches off the height...that should size it down, eh ?
Besides...Mr.McColl is again, helping me make this look like an impossible escape with that amazing brain of his and "something new" for me ! ~Rick~ |

Ian...you read my thoughts...but by the time it's sized down...I'll have just enough room and that's it. Em and I were going over different ideas last night as to where I should bolt the shackles so my hands don't touch together. The neck collar will be bolted behind me...my left hand in the upper left corner and my right hand in the lower right corner.
And with your help, Ian...escape is possible !! ~Rick~ |

I know where you are coming from Rick. I am Selling my Harbin style Levitation table which was custom designed for me. It Holds up to about 150 to 200 Kgs so the person that I levitate is not restricted to weight. The Base is so heavy that It takes two people to carry it. Not as heavy as a Table of Death but still a hinderance when it comes to quick setups.
