Dr. Whewell, a great mathematical scholar, once wrote out the following four lines, which can be read as a verse of rhyme.
U O A O O I O U O N O O O O M E T O O U O A O I D O S O I O N O O I O U T O O
Will you walk into my parlour? said the Spider to the Fly,
Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy; The way into my parlour is up a winding stair, And I've a many curious things to show when you are there. Oh no, no, said the little Fly, to ask me is in vain, For who goes up your winding stair -can ne'er come down again. |

Good Luck with this one, Stan!

And so no force, however great,
Can strain a cord, however fine, Into a horizontal line That shall be absolutely straight. whewell, an accidental instance of meter and rhyme. just thought it was kind of cool.

Hi Jessica, dig your poem. Y'all from Texas, huh?
OK. The figure "O" can be (but maybe isn't always) substituted for a different sound. In this case it could be either "cipher", "sigh for", or both, or not. Now get back to work.

Jackpot!
Once the gist of this one is understood, we can create many more similarly.

U O A O O I O U - You sigh for a cipher. Oh, I sigh for you
O N O O O O M E T O O - Oh, no - Sigh for cipher? Sigh for me too! U O A O I D O S O - You sigh for a cipher? I'd suffer so! I O N O O I O U T O O - I sigh for no cipher. I sigh for you, too! Is this at all close? |

Scott, all correct except check the word on the third line. It is not *suffer*. Other than that, I would say we have a solution. Good job, old bean.

Thanks!
In that case, how about this note, found on a napkin in a restaurant: I02O04I80 (No, it's not the guy's credit card number) What does it mean? |
