What is your favourite effect(s) from RRTCM? I love A Poker Puzzle as it looks stunning and is very simple to do.

Hi Graeme,
I'm fond of Topsy Turvy Cards, Poker Players Picnic as part of a gambling routine, Design for Laughter, Now You See It, using a force or peek to speed things up, The Changing Card and Top Change By-Play. And I've just scratched the surface!! Regards, Paul H |

I have to agree that Designed For Laughter is an absolute winner. There is another called The Circus Trick that I also found to be quite fun. This book is worth its weight in gold! Well... okay... maybe silver.

Royal Road is much more valuable for its lessons in sleights and technique than for its tricks, but it does have some strong effects. My favorite is Three crds Across, I use it all the time.

My favorite that I never see mentioned is Obliging Aces. The RRTCM was one of my first magic books and it's still one of my favorites. I think it is worth it's weight in gold.

Craig, it seems like you had only good intentions in starting this thread. You've obviously spent a good amount of time with RRTCM and now you want to see what others think. My only concern about a thread like this is that many people who haven't read the book will simply go through the book, find the tricks mentioned here, and be done. Do threads that ask for the best this and that help or hurt?
In the spirit of my above comments I'll mention that I love the section on platform card magic. |

Hi Noah!
I appreciate your concerns, as noted above. And I think you may be right, to some degree. A lot of people will go to RR and read ONLY the tricks that everyone agrees are the "best" in the book, ignoring everything else. Are we doing them a favor? Good question. I think, yes... Anything that inspires a person to buy, or having already bought, to READ a book, is a good thing. And some folks, as a result of this thread, may realize that they overlooked material in thier own libraries. I suspect that SOME of these people will not only look at the material we suggest in a thread like this, I believe they will take the lesson to heart and explore further in the hope that there is other material, not mentioned here, that may fit them. So, though your concern is valid, reaching even one person makes the effort worthwhile in my opinion. Yes, I think anything that gets people reading is a GOOD idea... Best, PSC

Some trick in which two cards transpose. (i believe it is in rrtcm) Hardcore effect without any dupes, I use it a lot.

I believe Tielie is referring to Rapid Transit. I'm also partial to Everybodys Card II and Intuition with Cards which is a wonderfully deceptive effect utilising the key card principle.
With regard to the worry that people will only read those recommended tricks, I thoroughly agree with Paul Chosse. In addition, once you get a flavour of the effects in RRTCM you just can't help delving deeper. I seem to remember Paul Wilson on another forum stating that RRTCM contained all that was needed to make a fully competent card magician. Regards, Paul H |

I'll have to say that the most I've got out of this book so far would be the sleights and techniques...I'm more concerned with getting those down well before I look at learning new tricks

I can't believe nobody has mentioned "Mentalivity". This plays as a very eery effect with 2 spectators. It's impossible!

Quote: Well that effect gets my vote as being simple, efficient and adaptable as a lead-in to an ACR routine. It's also shocking to the spectator as well!! Definitely one of my favs as is "Topsy Turvy Cards".

I think that the real value to RRTCM is not necessairly in all the sleights and tricks but rather some of the routining and subtleties explored. For example, effects such as Thought Stealer, Now you see it and the Ambitious Card have some excellent principles and subtleties that you can use to create your own effects. I won't set them out here but if you study effects like these carefully you can create minor miracles.
All the best. |
