Max,
I have never met you, but I want to let you know that the friendliness and quality of your answers are certainly a contradiction (in my opinion) to your on stage persona. You truely have a great personality in both venues, but on to my question. I have read several of your publications and wonder if you have any formal mathematical background (for example, game theory) that helps you in the creation of some of your effects, or is it simply your breadth and depth of magical knowledge? Also, when and why did you decide to learn to speak Japanese? Do you write and speak it as well? Are you self taught and how long did it take you to become proficient? I think your skill in the language has been the primary reason of bringing our two cultures together, magically speaking. Thank you for it. There is so much we as English speaking people, have gained in our art. I hope the Japanese feel the same way about learning from us. Any comments? Thanks.
Coram Deo

My formal math background is limited; I took the basic courses in high school and college. But my interest in math, particularly recreational math, came as a direct result of reading Martin Gardner's work, starting as a kid. So, I've done a lot of reading and exploring on my own.
Regarding the interface between magicians in Japan and the west, I'm hardly the first or only person to get involved therein. But, I have managed to help make connections here and there, which are beneficial to both groups, and that is pleasing. As to my learning that language, I discussed that in an earlier post. |
