Mr. Maven:
Greetings! I wonder if you'd be so kind as to answer a question regarding the use of commercial Magic media? Absent any explicit restrictions to the contrary, is it wrong for Magicians to share their original, unaltered Magic media with other Magi, or to make such media available to the secondary market? I enjoy acquiring and reading or viewing these media, and sometimes lend them to peers. Your thoughts on the ethicality of this practice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much, Leland Edward Stone |

I'm not sure I fully understand your question. If we're talking about original material, then I think one has the right to distribute it in any way one wishes.

I don't think the question meant "original" as in "I created it", but rather "original" as in, not an unauthorized duplication. I believe he was asking if it is ethical to resell items.

Aw, nuts...I really mangled that question. If I may try again:
Absent any explicit restrictions to the contrary, is it wrong for Magicians to purchase commercially available Magic media, use the information themselves, and then lend the unaltered media to other Magi to learn from as well? That is to say, if I were to buy a legitimate* copy of "Redivider" and incorporate some of its deviousness into my act, would I violate your rights by sharing the copy with a peer, who then did the same? Thanks again, Leland *As distinguished from copies unauthorized by their creator, which is clearly wrong and outside the scope of this question. |

Ah. I think Mike Close had the best approach here. To assume that no one is ever going to lend a book, trick, DVD or manuscript to a friend is foolish. Of course it happens. Mike's idea is to approach it as one does computer shareware: If you borrow something and don't use anything from it, simply return it to the person who loaned it to you. If you _do_ make use of some the ideas, then you ought to purchase your own copy.

Sounds like good advice to me.
