Well, I practiced it and I can do it 1 out of 10 times right now. When I do do it, it goes for a long time (4 seconds).

One extra subtlety, if you move your hand away from your body while spinning it on your finger, it gives the impression that the card is floating away from you and your just reaching out to catch it. It looks really good!

you're gonna love me for this one.
You can actually spin the card sideways. Just get good at it doing the normal spin first. It works the same way, just sideways.. not slanted! It has to be totally sideways. And for the elemental flourishers you can try spinning the card on your thumb with a fan underneath you.... just for fun do it in both hands. I learned to do it in both hands... I can spin the cards and let them come to a stop without loosing balance... it took awhile though... maybe a month. Have fun. |

If you are right handed the card usually spins clockwise, so try this. Spin the card counter-clockwise. Then try in both hands.

Actually, I started off learning this move by using my third finger to spin the card counter-clockwise (on my right hand). A bit strange, because I didn't know the exact way of doing it.

Thanks steel, your suggestion really helps. It just takes a little getting used to.

It's a nice move to put into your routines, like just before a card is produced etc. This move increases your credibility as a magician.

It is also published in a Racherbaumer book.

Hi,
The Racherbaumer book it is published in is Card Finesse 2. It is on page 36. There is tons of great stuff in Card Finesse 2 (and even more in Card Finesse 1) Card Finesse 2 even has the Charlie Miller Cascade pass. That is great! There is such wonderful magic and a couple flourishes in those books, old flourishes, but flourishes that are still used today. What a shame that so much of the material in that book is overlooked. You wouldn't want someone stealing a move that is already in that book because they had skipped over it. Check it out! Doug. |

I read somewhere that this is called the
'nova spin', except you spin it on the tip of your finger pointing straight up like a basketball. Can anyone back me on this? |

Spongebob, thanks for the complete citation. Part of my library is boxed up at the moment.

How to keep it spinning?
With lots of practice. LOL It took me two days to get it to spin every-time perfectly. It looks really cool if you do it with both hands at the same time. I have used this sleight all the time. How do you stop the card from falling to the ground if you do it sideways? Brad

Great Domino,
For me, a super light touch and keeping the index and middle fingers close together gets it reving the best. This is definitely a flourish with a high wow to work ratio. Pretty easy to learn but looks very cool. Hey Lonnie, any more detail about the sideways variation? Do you mean it starts off sideways or do you get it spinning flat first? Like magicbrad I don't see how to get around that annoying gravity thing. |

I believe the Nova Spin can be done either way i.e. finger pointing up or between the thumb and finger.
It's in an old set of lecture notes I have kicking around somewhere. |

Rocco (of D'lite fame) put out a card effect using this spin called centrifical fours. Spectator "selects" a card that is then spun as listed above and all of the pips are shown to have slid to the edge of the card. The card had a pin point in the center which made it easier to spin. That was actually my only complaint about the trick. Specatators will want to look at the card and they can't because of the hole.

Is this move on the Daryl Encyclopedia of Card Sleights anywhere?
What other video sources teach this. I try and try and my effect is the perfect 'Card to floor' move. |
