It sounds truely awful to me.
The premise of the video is he teaches you how he "creates" his magic. then he says everyone is creative. No. Not everyone should be trying to create effects, and you cant watch a video on how to be creative and expect to learn. It's a silly premise. A much better investment would be something that helps you THINK about your magic. if you like sankey, his "beyond secrets" is interesting. Eugene Burger has "growing in the art of magic" (among others), darwin has the famous "stronge magic" and ken weber has "maximum entertainment". All of those make for amazing reads, and they teach you how to make magic work for yourself. Not coming up with new concepts, but clever routines. Just my two cents.
If you're reading this you're my favourite magician.

I guess you can try. Who is it that decides who SHOULD or should no be trying to create new effects? Routines or stories are easier to create than new effects in magic. Perhaps Jay has cogent arguments and an encouraging manner that will foster some novelty in your magic.

I don't know.
Lately Mr. Sankey hasn't been coming out with the best stuff. With this product, it almost sounds as if he's trying to cash in on the fact that there are a lot of newbies out there who change one move on a routine and call it their own. Personally, I don't think the creation of new magic should be encouraged. This only creates inferior versions of good effects. It is better to learn magic, perfect it, and think about how to improve your PERFORMANCE. The rest will come with TIME. Magic does not need new magic right now, it needs better performers. Interesting topic. If any of you decide to buy it, I'd be interesting in hearing what it's all about. As far as Sankey, I heard from just about everyone that "Front Row Sankey" was REALLY great stuff. So, I don't know. I personally feel like most the stuff he comes up with is clever and as far as his DVDs it seems there is always at least 1 or 2 things for everyone if not more.

"Personally, I don't think the creation of new magic should be encouraged. This only creates inferior versions of good effects." There is nothing wrong with the creation of new magic, it is not always the ceation of inferior versions of existing effects or re-invention of the wheel." However people should be encouraged to be a bit more studious/knowledgeable before thrusting their ideas into the world. Jonathon was quite right in saying one can try to model creativity, that was what started off the NLP movement! Re: "Magic does not need new magic right now, it needs better performers." Can't argue that there isn't enough magic out there already, but most won't find it because it's in print. There are some excellent performers, but many who should aim a lot higher. Jay can release what he wants, and it is interesting we are starting to see "other" than trick DVD's. Paul. |

Its all about money.
first he puts out tricks. then the best of. then his sessions on how he came up with those tricks. now his thought process he uses when he gos to sesion and creat trick. who cares. I think a good rule of thumb is if you think this video would be good for you, then you shouldnt be creating yet. and if your ready and able to create, you don't neet this video. only a real student of magic should be creating. again, just my two cents, but it seems to me since its so easy to put out dvds right now that peopl who have no place releasing material do so.

Nordatrax,
I hope you're not saying Jay Sankey has no place releasing material or DVDs. Whether this particular DVD is good or not remains to be seen, but to say that he has no place releasing material is quite a strong statement. Afterall, where would we be without ideas like paperclipped, Holy Moley, Rev. Coin Magic, and the hundreds of other ideas and effects Jay has created. I think everyone would agree that Sankey has contributed a lot of great stuff to the magic community. Sure, he's been marketing a lot lately and putting out a DVD a week it seems like, but I think there is at least one or two good things on each of his new DVDs from what I've heard. If you don't like it, don't buy it. If you just ASSUME you don't like it, at least wait until someone does buy it and then you can make an educated assesment of it, but to say Sankey doesn't have a place releasing any material is too strong a statement if I understood it correctly, but perhaps I missed what you were saying. If so, please forgive me. I just hope someone writes a review on this DVD so we can all see what it's really all about. Dann |

Sankey was great and then seemed to fall into a 'publish or parish' mind set. Releasing cheap crap like Ring of Fire and then getting ****y went people complain. I hope he pulls out of the tailspin soon. He has been missed.

We will not know how good this DVD will be until someone buys it. IMHO we should not judge a DVD that we have not seen, even if it sounds like a bad idea.

Perhaps you could elaborate and tell us why we would be better off? |

Magic does need creativity. I don't think we need new versions of twisting the aces, acr, homing card, matrix etc. These are all classic effects with dozens of methods out there and very few of them do anything to further the plot or heighten the effect. I agree totally with those that say Jay's quality has gone downhill. Maybe it has to do that he deals so much with MM. All about the money and not the magic anymore. You want to know how to be creative with new plots, and further old ones? Pick up books of wonder, or the art of close-up magic. Besides from being great performers, Tommy and Eugene think hard about their magic. They want you to also. Example. There are SO many versions of card in box, but none as strong as Tommy's. His attention to detail to creates one of the best illusions in close-up magic. (The card falling from the box.) Maybe it's unfair to judge Jay like this, but his stuff has gone so far downhill, he's brought it on himself.

I don't think Jay should stop putting out videos and tricks, but choose the materieal more wisely. The same is true for many performers/producers of DVDs. It seems to be the norm now to release at least 2 DVDs in a set. Usually 3, sometimes even 4! And most of this is fluff. Narrow it down people. Either that or lower prices. There are MANY great magicians who are guilty of this. However, I'm not sure if it's them, or the producers of the DVDs.

To be honest, I think the only purpose for this is that he wants to make money. In my view nobody needs to buy this new Sankey product. But that's of course only my opinion....

How can any of you judge a new product when you haven't even seen it yet? You accuse people of not thinking enough about their magic and yet you make bold statements based on... nothing.
Front Row Sankey was a terrific DVD. And if you actually listen to Jay Sankey, he is very thoughtful and insightful. You know, I just did a close up show yesterday and while I got a lot of great reactions with a broad range of material, the effects that fried people the most were "Stuck Up", "Stirring Silver", "Back In Time", "Dough" and "Full Lotus"... All Sankey effects. I think to say people should not create new magic is ridiculous. What good does stifling creativity do? Some people should sharpen their performance skills, some people should work on perfecting old routines and some should create new ones. Otherwise magic, or any art for that matter, would shrivel up and die. Sankey is very knowledgable when it comes to creating magic. I, for one, would be interested to see his process. A lot of us could probably learn a great deal studying the creative process of a person who has a lot to offer the magic community. Of course, I don't know anything either. I haven't seen the DVD. But I am certainly willing to give it a chance. I am astounded at the incredible amount of narrow mindedness on this thread. I expect more from the intelligent members of this forum.
