Hello, Mr. M --
I think it's an absolute shame that to most members of the American public who have seen you in various televised TV magic specials through the years, you're most consistently "the guy who does the 'think of any square on the screen, now move two squares to the left' at-home math/magic thingy." Magicians and mentalists all know that you're so much better than that. Do you plan to ever have your "Thinking" show taped and televised, or something else that will finally show the nation the true devilish brilliance of which you are capable? Best, Neil P.S. I perform interactive television material for four reasons:
1. I like it. 2. The public likes it. 3. I do it well. 4. Producers ask me to do it and pay me money. Neil, if you don't like that sort of material, then please don't watch it. And, if a television producer should happen to contact you and ask you to devise something along those lines, rather than take the effort to learn how to create and present it, just give them my contact information. |

I simply wish the aforementioned television producers paid you even more to produce a full-length show where you could really stretch your wings. Are you entertaining any such projects? Best, Neil

At the moment in the U.S. market, television producers are looking for "the next David Blaine." As such, there is little interest in building a special or series around someone of my age.
Fortunately, I get the chance to do a wider range of material in other countries. And of course, I haven't stopped pitching show ideas in this country. One never knows when the elements will fall into place. |

I have a strong math background and, while I agree, some of Max's routines on TV were obviously mathematical in structure, many of the routines he has published are absolutely diabolical and killer routines. The last routine in his video 'Mindgame' was a move 2, move 3, type of effect, but the math was so well hidden, it played very strong. Contimental is another that kills.
I think as a magician, we often times forget what it's like to see and feel the 'magic'. We're so close to the solution that we lose the ability to 'wonder'. I would suggest reading Osterlind's Trilogy on 'Making Magic Real', 'Making Real Magic', and 'Essays' to get back the 'magic'.

I didn't think Neil's post was knocking the TV math stuff as much as he was bemoaning the fact that Max is so much more than that and that the public has no idea of the extra dimensions to such a great performer. Personally, I liked the math stuff, but I too would love to see Max get Blaine type exposure.
I was shocked to see that Max mentioned that age was a barrier to his TV aspirations. But then on further thought and as someone who writes for TV himself (music, that is) it's not too surprising that the industry is so shallow. |

I think the attraction of the "pick a square" types of effects is that they happen with each viewer. The viewers aren't watching someone else's mind be read, they're experiencing their own minds being read. Big difference.

We look at it and say, "It's obviously mathematical, or at least a high-probability choice (like '37' or 'grey elephants from Denmark')." Joe and Jane Layman are freaking out about the fact that that guy on TV just read their minds. Geoff
