Did you actually own much material at all when you started out? I'm of the belief that if I was totally cut off from all expensive material, that just with Annemann and Corinda I could actually do well. I believe that due to my getting by with just them for quite a while when I started.
A lot of people may not have much money and sometimes there seems to be a hidden message that if you do not buy expensive material you're missing out. How do you feel on this? H.W

I was raised in a middle-class family (i.e., neither poor nor rich). Early on, my parents did me a great favor (although I did not see it as such at the time): They told me, "It's your hobby. You pay for it."
So, I had to budget carefully. In my mid-teens, every Saturday I went into downtown Boston to hang out at Holden's (this was during the period that Ronnie Gann was the owner). At that time you could buy a close-up trick for a dollar, but many weeks I didn't have that much to spend. However, Ronnie had a box of old magazines that sold for about ten cents apiece. (Abra issues were five cents.) So, at the very least, I'd come home with a few magazines. This taught me that the greatest value for my minimal funds was magic literature. |
