In general, would you prefer close-up magic, or stage magic?

I love both.
I have created many magic for both when I was Tenyo's creator. I discarded other than Card Magic because I wished to concentrate on study and creation of Card Magic which I love most. Hideo Kato |

Close up. Stage requires more expensive (sometimes) props.

I enjoy close-up because it can be used in so many ways everyday all day as we go through life. It is a grand way to share magic.
The economic truth is that I could never make enough money doing close-up to justify taking the time away from stage magic. Except for tradeshow booths, close-up has never been a cash cow for me. And at the tradeshow, magic is not the only reason I'm there. (I am also an old university professor who taught MBA students Marketing, Management, and Finance. Consulting is also valuable. The tradeshow booth allows me to meet and interview customers, observe competitors, and to observe the activities of the employees of the sponsoring firm.) Stage magic simply gave me more shows, more repeat business and more money per show. I enjoy it. For nearly forty-seven years I have been on stage as an entertainer. At a very early age I got started as a stage show musician. The switch to magic only was just a change of vehicles. Fortunately, I like it. Most of my friends, regardless of opportunities, learned to hate it very quickly. I just must be slow! Bob Magic By Sander |

I love close-up magic! Doing it and watching it. Nevertheless, most of my shows are stage or kid parties, so I usually do prop gigs. I would like to do more close-up, though, because it gives me the biggest thrill, but, like Bob Sanders, stage gigs pay my rent. I am slowly trying to make the transition to close-up by getting a good restaurant gig: if it doesn't pay too well, at least I'll have fun doing the little miracles, and maybe even get a free meal!
Hideo: As someone who used to create Tenyo effects, I must give you my compliments: Tenyo's effects are very fine.

I prefer close-up because it is more personal. I like the intimacy and impromptu nature of one on one or small group performances. Stage magic is too impersonal and removed, plus it's expensive!!! Mark.

Hi folks,
Yes! I love both of them. But I normally do close-up because I love the audience interaction with my magic and I like their participation to create a happy and enjoy atmosphere. ...You do realize you asked that question in a card forum, right?

I remember the wonder I felt as a kid watching even the most rudimentary card and coin effects. Despite being a (decidedly amateur) magician myself, I am still dazzled when I see a terrific close-up worker in action. So, my vote clearly goes to close-up, for its intimacy and straight-forwardness. Like many in these forums, I was blown away by Ricky Jay's show, which I was fortunate enough to see live -- the perfext blend of close-up and stage magic (and no corny Copperfield stuff).

Close-up is more intimate with the audience and it's what the audience remembers most from a show.

I prefer all venues of magic.Close up,parlor, stage. Each venue has its own pros and cons. But if I had to choose just one for the rest of my life I would prefer to do close up.
