Although I have a fair amount of impromptu material in my repertoire, I rarely do it in that sort of context. There is a school of thought that says a mentalist (or, for that matter, a magician) should be able to perform at a moment's notice. Perhaps that's true, but it doesn't mean he/she should _want_ to do so.

I always imagine, say, Jascha Heifetz at a party, and someone asks him to play, and he says, "Well, I don't have my violin with me, but if you can find me a yardstick and a rubber band..."

Now, you might counter by observing that a violinist needs an instrument, while mentalism is theoretically propless. But if someone approaches Al Pacino on the street, do you imagine he does a soliloquy for them?
