Hi everyone! I am glad to be the newest member of this forum.
My story is similar to many of the others that I have been reading here. When I was a little kid, I always loved watching magic on TV. I also had some locks and keys in my genetic makeup. I remember picking some simple locks in kindergarten. A few years later, I found a book in the library that changed my life and gave me some direction. It was the The Great Houdini! I said to my self " how cool is this?...a guy that picks locks, does magic and escapes from handcuffs". To a 7 year old, the 1880's seemed like an era when the dinosaurs roamed so I had trouble relating to the chronology of Houdini's career. I had not even seen a real pair of handcuffs yet, but I was inspired by how he performed magic and escaped from ropes. A year or two later I was performing magic for birthday parties and was escaping from ropes at family get together's. About this time a magical day for me occurred. An IRS Special Agent that lived down the street showed me his handcuffs. I was hooked ever since. As time went by, my interest in performing magic dwindled but my cuff craving only got more intense. I started collecting every modern handcuff and leg iron that could get my hands on, or in. When I moved to San Diego about 25 years ago, I found my first set of antique cuffs. I was fortunate to be able to go to the Pomona Gun Shows during its "Golden Years" and really added to the collection. I joined the West Coast Lock Collectors in the late 90's and EBay in 2000. The Collection really took off and I now have about 500 different pieces. I have had some lucky bids during two of the Houdini auctions and now own 5 authenticated pieces. Jail keys and locks are also a sideline to my collection. I hope that you will click onto my EBay "about me" page from my profile and I would be honored if you would sign my guestbook once you are there. For my livelihood, I am a locksmith (can you believe it?) I have 2 stores just north of San Diego. It keeps me very busy and one of the things like I like to do for my customers while they are waiting, is to perform some magic. I like to do only tricks that are lock or key themed. Key-R-Rect and the Locked Deck are some of my favorites. I am always on the lookout for key and lock related tricks, so please let me know what is out there and where I can get them. When I am not working, I am volunteering for the Sheriff Dept. I love it when I can ride in our helicopter and am fond of the firearms training and practice. Most of all I love just being around people who carry handcuffs. Please drop on over to http://www.handcuffs.org. We have a nice forum hosted by Joe Lauher and he has the best web-site with great articles about escape artists and a wealth of information about restraints. He is a regular visiter to this site as well. I visit there frequently and try to contribute any information that I can. Well I have rambled on long enough. I look forward to making some new friends over here and hope to contribute what I can. Thanks for your time in reading this bio! mark
