It's not a matter of "needing" to work the street. I'd like to see some of the "best" get out on the street, gather a tip, work it and pass a hat. This is one of the most educational experiences a magician can have. If there are any weak spots, lulls, or holes in your show, you will lose your crowd. It's not an easy way to make a living. But it sure is a rush when you get a fat hat. A lot of Houstonians who lived in the ghetto looked down on Lightnin' Hopkins because he played in the streets. They are forgotten. He is immortal. Ponder this.

I'm not sure who is scouting for street acts for Old Town, but when we had the Old Towne Magic shop in the beginning we used to scout a lot of street peformers, but the centers management may have taken that over now. During season, don't under estimate the larger flea markets in Fla either. They used to be very good spots, especially during the tourist season. There used to be an indoor/outdoor swap meet in Fort Lauderdale and a lot of street peformers years ago did very well there. Jake

Church Street in Orlando is currently undergoing renovation.
The only thing you will find there are bulldozers and dust. I believe Old Town is private property. You'd have to contact them directly. Disney has buskers from time to time on the Boardwalk. You must audition with the Mouse to work there. Universal has outdoor performers at Citywalk sometimes. There were outdoor performers at Sea World, but I believe they're all gone now. All of these locations are private property and with the exception of Old Town, and Church Street years ago, I have never seen anyone pass the hat. |

Thanks,
There doesn't look to be much chance of me setting up a pitch there, considering Florida seems to be very tight against this. Thanks for all the replies, if anyone else has any information it would be greatly appreciated. By the way, on the odd chance someone is curious about busking in St. John's Newfoundland, it is completely legal. Set up where you want(with the exception of store fronts), no permit necessairy.

Gazzo is performing in Florida right now. So there is still work to be had, if you know where to look.

That was his just fourth retirement (or was it his fifth? I've lost track)
Like some have said here, busking isn't a job, it's a lifestyle. It's in his blood.

Thanks again,
Mike, you've busked in Kissime, outside of Old Town, and had no problems? I'll have to look into finding Gazzo down there, I need to see him perform, considering he is the king. Again, any more info is very welcome.

Up and down that whole shopping area there. Also go across the street there is a big indoor flea market and shopping area. I knew not to go into old town, that would not only get me thrown out but also I'd have constant heat so I kept a fair distance.
I didn't have a permit either so it would have been easy to shut me down but I wasn't even bothered. |

If you find any good locations in the Orlando area, please post them here.
I've been thinking about it, and I think I'm going to give Kissime a shot, outside the flea market, unless someone has another good location.

BTW, as to good locations here, you can set up on Orange ave. in certain places, but don't expect too many huge edges. The strip malls & flea markets around Kissimee can be good, but it's sort of a crap-shoot as to whether or not you'll be allowed to perform or tweaked by the cops. One word of advice: Theres a Disney-sponsered village for terminally ill children in Kissimee ("Give kids the world") and they will accept all sorts of volunteer enetertainment.....provided it's geared toward kids. The advantage? These people have connections, and they can get you permission to perform in some tight areas. Now THAT'S karma!

Well one other thing, which pertains to this topic.
Are there any good magic shops in the Orlando area? I remember reading on the Magic Masters website they have a shop in downtown Disney. Any other recomended shops? Thanks.

No, but I wouldn't mind checking out the store. We don't have any magic stores in my entire province, so I'm going to any one I can.
