Why does the Magic community hate Blaine?
I've heard it's because he uses effects that aren't his, but don't we all do that? Explain. |

I love him.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

Two sides. One side like him and rate him for doing something different to whats normally been done in the past. I'm one of those that like him.
You then get the other side who don't think he's original, or they think that because he's bought cheap effects from a magic store and used them to wow the spectators that its not right. And then you get those that think his persona and patter are just plain bad. But then, I'm not one for stage illusions and all the prancing around they do. |

I personally don't hate Blaine. I think he's pretty cool.
I am not a fan of his patter or performance style, but he's successful with it so more power to him. I think what you're seeing from the Magic Community isn't hate for Blaine, it's more of jealousy and envy than anything else. Some MAY feel that they are better than Blaine and deserve recognition for it. Some may feel that he's not 'all that' as he appears to be. Some may hate him because they find him annoying or a horrible performer BY THEIR STANDARDS. I know I dislike a few magicians for that same reason too, but not to the extent of bad-mouthing them, I just don't like the way they present their magic and it stops there. You can't please everyone, that's just the way the world goes. "Those who hate you don't win, unless you hate them - and then, you destroy yourself" - Anonymous Take care, Logan

I think that the people who hate Blaine are mostly street performers who get confronted with, "hey can you do that thing David Blaine does..." "levitate 4 feet of the ground".. "put your hand through a window".. do this..do that..
It's mostly his 'fake' magic that is unexplainable to the laymen. People are also mad a Blaine because he was targeted by a magic secrets revealed show...but that's really not his fault. I am sure he did a lot more than use other people's tricks to gain his fame. |

He's not a dork.
He doesn't do the pass well enough. He made a name for himself doing simple tricks that aren't too difficult.

Lets face he's not bad as such, he's competant at what he does and he does get good reactions from audiences - he does entertain them - which in the final analysis is what magic is all about IMO.
He's a showman first and foremost, he clearly aspires to be the modern day Houdini, he clearly doesn't aspire to be the best card guy or coin guy or whatever guy in the world. The effects he has used have been around for ages - but he presented them differently in a way that modern audiences could relate too - that's why he has been succesfull. I don't quite understand why there is all this resentment towards him - because he used classic effects that had been done before, hmmm hands up how many of us do that? So why couldn't he have been more original in his effects - how many members of the public would say they've seen an ambitious card routine before? If your end game is entertaining an audience it really doesn't matter that 0.1% of the audience has seen the routine before. You can not like his performing style / persona etc, that's all down to personal taste but I don't have any time for the argument that the effects are too simple / seen them before I think that view has a basic misunderstanding of what magic is about. He has raised the general profile of magic and IMO that is only a good thing. |

There are acts that are good for magic and some that are bad for the art.David is a performer who is making history whether you like it or not.

I think Mr Blaine is a store demonstrator (and not a very good one).
His personality is AWFUL. The only reason the public like him so much is because they aren't exposed to much magic. Lets face it, you don't see a woman for 5 years and along comes Vanessa Feltz, you're gonna want some of it! Get my drift? |

I just can't stand how every time I show a new person magic they always say "HEY, HAVE YOU EVER SEEN DAVID BLAINE?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!!?!??!?!!??!?!?!?!!?!?"

Yeah David Blaine seems to be THE name that laymen think of when they hear the word magic. The first time I ever did magic for any given person, they ask me about Blaine. I respond: Blaine is TV magic, a lot of his stuff is impossible without TV and editing. And I truly believe that. He has to rely on his camera crew and editing people to make stuff look good now? What kind of magic is that?

Boy, I never thought about the bad patter and use of tricks that have been done. I think reasonable magicians who have been around awhile can see the good he is/has done for magic. The patter/tricks aren't the issue(With me).
It's the camera tricks. Mainly the levitation one. It's just not fair. If it didn't play on TV the way he ACTUALLY did it for the live audience, then you just leave it out. You don't re-edit and stage a whole different scene just to make it work for TV. That's the only issue I have. Otherwise, I enjoyed his specials. By the way, from a TV standpoint, what he did with the levitation shot is "fair game" and totally acceptable. In TV, you're trying to get "good TV", and if that means a little fudging here and there, no problem. That's the way TV works, like re-shoots on the "reality" shows. You don't know about them, but without the re-shoots, the shows wouldn't be as good. From a magicians standpoint, it's just wrong(In my eyes). But from a TV side, go for it. |

Some TV magic I've seen, such as a trick I watched Lance Burton do, its a mathematical/selfworking trick, where you choose a picture on the screen, and you movearound in different steps, and he "guesses" what your picture is, that stuff is OK, but not when it all requires editing just to make the trick work.

Objectively now - comparing Blaine's skills to a bad store demonstrator is patently ridiculous - he is competant!
The public have been exposed to lots of magic over the years - for example in the UK 'The Paul Daniels Magic Show' ran for absolutely ages as you may or may not remember! But it became so passe in the eyes of the public. The key point is, rightly or wrongly the public had grown tired of guys in tux's doing traditional presentations in magic. He changed the presentation, the magic was the same, but Blaine just made it accessible. Envy and jealously are at the root of this resentment and I think it's sad. |

I personally feel David Blaine is keeping magic alive, for that I like him. The reason I do not care for him is because of the so called "Stunts" he does, if he would stick to performing magic instead of trying to convince people he is "SUPERHUMAN" I would like him a lot more. Save the stunts for the sideshow..Do the street magic that made you a household name and forget the blocks of ice and smile occasionally..

Oh yeah I forgot the group of people who think that because he edited his levitation so the public at home a)didn't figure out how he did it and b) so the public at home got to 'see' what the people he did the levitation did.
I've performed the levitation on a couple of occasions and have had a major reaction from the spectators. When asked how high I levitated they say a good couple of feet when really it's only inches hence the huge reactions. People at home are just gonna see an inch or two. |

Most people have never seen closeup magic and Blaine has brought it into their homes via TV.
While we know better, an important reason for people liking him is that lots of his stuff seems totally impromptu. There's no reason to hate this guy. The publicity his endurance stunts get reminds a bit of Houdini's public escape performances. |
