Go on, do it...PRACTICE!!! Don't just sit there reading about how to do it, DO IT.
You are just collecting data about practice, how much of it will you actually DO, not just think about, but do!!!!
JJDrew has commented on how empty this section of the Café is, well let's fill it up with real and useful data. After this post I am going to log off and practice an effect. Later I will come back and post a report on what it was and how I went about the process, what I learned from this session and what insights I may have gained.
I hope that others will follow suit(or beat me to it) and add to the thread with their own "I Just Did It". Or this topic can just sink to the bottom and the tumbleweeds can keep on rolling through...well, see ya in a while.

Well true to my word, here I am. Twisting the aces was the trick. I practiced with the camcorder (a harsh judge indeed.) I need to work on the buckle/pulldown which occurs twice in the version (Vernon) I do, I tend to fumble, from watching the footage I feel confident that the rest of the mechanics (counts) are deceptive but I need to get away from patter that simply justifies the actions. I simply don't like the standard lines about the weight of the aces. For the most part I am satisfied with the direction of my patter, but at the start when you turn the ace of spades face up remove it and then place it back on the packet...that bit has me stumped for good patter...anyone?

Could you simply do it as a demonstration of what will be happening? (I don't know the original Vernon patter, so if I'm repeating something bear with me).

Now the aces are going to turn face up (turn ace face up in demonstration) just like this, one at a time. Now are you watching closely? (turn ace face down) Let's begin.

I'll head off to practice now myself. I like the idea of this forum. It gets people off their duffs.

Practicing a lot is essential to get the moves right. Practicing with a video is even better. You get to see your mistakes. I go a little further. Make sure you have someone to act as critic to whatever it is you just practiced. The moves may be great, but how about the presentation? It does take practice to get that down correctly also!

Just my opinion.

Hey up! Today I have been mostly eating the push through shuffle, which I learned from glenn bishops hidden theatre( thanks mr bish!) as soon as I saw this my brain started fizzing and I have been at it all morning and I can hear the ghost of Vernon telling me those aces wont twist themselves... Smile
It is a rare thing for me to learn a new move as I think I spend a LOT of time on anything new,(well I have been told that two years is a long time to rehearse a matrix routine)I might do it for my girlfriend and friends during the learning process but I wont do it for people who don't know me until its perfect. Method, patter, movement and context have all got to be perfect. Anyway you say "what are you doing the push through shuffle for? Twist those aces boy!" Well I need to get the aces first and I am toying with a few 4 ace productions, (the ripper, Doug Edwards pop out aces etc).
Now JJ's patter idea: yes I think I will go with that, a sort of :
"now I shouldnt tell you what I am going to do, but you seem like a perceptive person so I'm sure you will get the idea, I have the four aces here and each ace (display AS)is going to turn face up (turn AS face up)...
Begin the sequence of replacing the AS while I continue:"...in a weird kind of way, watch...". Hmmm. Ok I am off to practice that for a while, I have a feeling it may give me the cheese vibes but repeating the lines will phase that out.
I'll let you know how it goes..., after a couple more push through shuffles. Smile

I just wish I had more.

...and then some! I practice whenever I can and that's as much as I can do (ha ha)
I practice everyday in short bursts sometimes as little as 2 or 3 minutes at a time. I aint no pro so I have a "proper" job Smile with 2 days a week off, Which I use to rehearse and script and go through notes and check up on the Café.
Being able to do the trick might mean you can step down the intensity of your practice but if a trick is part of your repetoire then you should practice it every so often to keep it fresh.

I agree, pratice make perfect. knowing how to do the trick is not good enough, you have to do it right.
