Dai Vernon (David Frederick Wingfield Verner) was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada on June 11, 1894. He got the nickname of "Dai" when a typo in a newspaper gave him Dai instead of David. His last name "Vernon" came from the dancer, Vernon Castle, who with his wife was a dancer in early part of the century. While in New York, his name Vernon was carried over since most New Yorkers could not pronounce it correctly. Vernon is, without doubt, the most influential conjuror of the 20th century. He died at the age of 98, in Hollywood, California in 1992.

My Ehrich Weiss post was in jest. I assumed that ryay was looking for the password to a protected web site somewhere. Sometimes we make it too easy.

Christopher,
Big dream, I am thinking.
Yes, I am a magician. No I did not make my hare (hair) disappear... it just took early retirement.

All interested parties should be on the lookout for David Ben's new Dai Vernon biography (volume 1 of 2) to appear this summer from Squash Publishing. This volume will cover Vernon's life from birth to 1941, and is full of the personalities that made magic boom in the first half of the 20th century (in a large part, as a result of their interactions with Vernon): Cardini, Dr. Daley, Al Baker, S. Leo Horowitz, Faucett Ross, T. Nelson Downs, and many many more. Their tales and those of others are woven together with Vernon's life to paint a rich, illuminating portrait of perhaps the most influential magician of the 20th century.
