I am wanting to work restraunts by doing card magic and hopefully if I can one day do XCM that would be great. What is the best place to start for me in your opinion? I am familiar with card basics and own several DVD's and books on slieghts and basic card magic. I want something where the effect is an instant wow. Any thoughts?

So are you wanting magic effects or XCM moves?
Xtreme Beginners DVD is almost out by De'vo which will be hours of teaching the basics. I would also suggest EOPCF by Jerry Cestkowski...he's a brilliant man and a wonderful person to meet and jam with. Seif |

I agree with Seif - The Encyclopedia of Playing Card Flourishes is probably the best place to start.

I agree that EOPCF is a great starting point… but it’s 75 bucks… so start saving and send away for it…
In the meantime the best place to start is right here… Start downloading every video you can get your grubby little fingers on… I’ve only been hanging around for a couple months, but I’ve managed to start quite a big collection. You can’t learn from all of them, I wouldn’t suggest trying to learn anything off of the videos put out by the pros. But for the most part, you can watch and learn off of a lot of the videos out there… For a great starting point… I would go to the handlordz forum and down load all the videos in round one of the tournyment… It’s “one handed cuts” Definitely get BURNS videos… IMO it was the best video of the round, and he does everything clean smooth and best of all clear. He’s really good, but easy enough to follow and learn a trick or two off of. Also watch for the tutorials that people put out every now and then, Jason has a couple new ones that are on this board somewhere If you want I can email you a junk load of videos… just shot me an email. But if you hang out in the forums and DL all the videos you’ll be a whiz in no time. Welcome to the boards Deadpeople |

Another place you can go is magicvideodepot.com. They have a ton of videos you can download as well.

For xcm definatly the EOPCF, and I'm glad to here your taking an interest in our art! the reason I don't say Begginerz is because I havent an idea about how begginer it is, but I'm sure it would definatly teach you almost as much as EOPCF. I had a little trouble starting out cause I did it with CTG, which I understand is for a intermediate level, but now its all good.

Same here mala. I learned intermediate stuff like the flipback fan, before I even learned the thumb cut.lol
Anywho, in my opinion, the EoPCF is the ONLY way to go as of right now to learn (properly), and to get started in xcm. As for wow factor, any and all of xcm has a wow factor so to speak. It depends on how smooth you are, and your presentation. Just like in magic. Almost all magic effects have a wow factor, but if performed crappily, the specs will be bored to tears. The same thing can happen in xcm. To start off, learn one handed cuts, some fans, deck separations, and a spring or two. that's a good, rounded, beginner basis I suppose. There really isn't a step-by-step progressive guide as to what you should learn first. You are left to your imagination. that's whats great about it. Welcome to xcm and have fun... |

For some reason the move I know that typically has the greatest wow factor suprisingly is the spring. even if I do something crazy like a quad cobra or something there all like "Let me see that big one again!" id say the one that is almost or of greater wow value is the heaven display. you'll find that many very hard moves simply do not have a big wow value, which can become quite frustarating at times.

I'd recommend TEOPCF as well.
If you want it to suit your magic a little more, I'd go with the Dan and Dave system or such, but as its XCM, I guess TEOPCF is best.

I think the spring and one hand shuffle are big hitters, even though they are easy.
I like cards.

I learned the wrong way when I started doing it, and I'm really not sure how I learned it before I got the EOPCF.
EDIT:The spring I mean

I've never had anyone laugh while I did springs the "magicians method" I did so until I bought the bible and none ever laughed, people just thought it was awesome.
The "magicians way" is not the incorrect way, it is the original way, the "XCM: ers way" though is a variation, a variation I prefer though. XB looks good, I probably wont buy it though, I have other more important things to put my money on. But I guess it could be a good starting point. I can do all the stuff showed in the Demo to XB, so its not really anything for me, but for beginners, as the title says it is probably nice

The only thing shown in that "demo" is some fans and a charlier combo... thers gonna be more to it than that. I hope you don't buy this one H. I don't want you to learn this beginner stuff. hehehe

From what I seen, previews and screenshots. This DVD will benefit beginners and pros alike. How can it not? De'vo, Jerry, McBride and Daryl teaching you. Learning from the best, learning to do things the proper way. There were things that I thought I was doing right for a while only to find out I did them wrong. I'm sure this DVD will do the same for people.

I assure you, anybody who is even slightly interested in xcm will buy the Xtreme Beginnerz dvd ~ regardless of skill, ability, gender or race. XB discriminates against no-one
And the expected price is well below the true value of the dvd. If you are interested in xcm material and you do not want to pay for the bible (just yet), XB will be definitely worth the wait. Antz |

Hehe yeah I know.
I bought the bible rather than other stuff as I think the DVD:s also focus a lot on presentation as a Xtreme Card Manipulator, the bible is just pure moves, and that's what I'd like. I enjoy my bible though, the material never ends, everytime I read it it is basically like "Hmm, did Jerry update the book while I were asleep or something?" Just so much stuff, hehe.
