Aaron,
As a hobbyist, I spend much more time practicing than I do performing. This has never been a problem for me, since I very much enjoy practicing. However, sometimes it seems that I get a lot out of my practice session, and other times it seems that I'm just treading water. I've identified what are, for me, some of the things that make certain practice habits more or less helpful, but I was wondering if you've experienced this problem yourself. I suppose my question is, how do you approach practicing (both sleights and routines) in order to get the most out of your time investment? Paul Sherman

For starters, and this is a big one, unless you perform on a couch with your forearms on your knees, don't practice that way. More people lose more time that way. Though it does qualify you to make your reputation performing on internet movies.
Second, and this is a big one, consider your time learning in two steps. R&D, and then practice. Do not put in the Reps on a move unitl you are entirely sure of its design, and that it will indeed accomplish what you need it to. Only then should you lock it into your muscle memory. This mistake cost me years in the formative days. You cannot, in these over published times, simply assume the author has taken the appropriate time and attention in describing the work. You may spend a year learning an inferiour technique. Now, instead of learning a new technique, you will have to unlearn the old one first. Dont' let this happen to you. Best, Aaron |
