The value of original instructions might be a good topic for another thread. To me the instructions included with an effect are equal in value to any props supplied. Like you, I too save and file the instruction sheets. They function very well as a refresher on the workings and presentation. Another aspect of preserving the instructions has to do with different mindsets. As one progresses through the magic learning curve, skill sets improve. As you grow both chronologically and technically, they provide a perspective today that you might have missed years ago. For instance, in the past I would become a bit miffed when the execution required doing "your favorite force". Since I was not experienced enough to have " my favorite" anything, I felt patronized. Now, I do have technical skills that give me an opportunity to choose a force and tailor it to the illusion. Nick Maggio |

A video is an excellent idea Larry.
I personally keep a notebook. It says the trick name, a breif description, and where I can find the instructions (in my library). |

Just one remark on this subject, as it is dear to my heart.
I've been out of magic for over 10 years and it is amazing how many details re the finer points of handling got lost re certain routines. Now, actually I found out, it was a good thing to NOT have done the stuff for those 10 years, as it forced me to reconstruct each and every routine. The result -to me- was amazing. I actually managed to improve and simplify and even get a better effect out of some of the stuff I earlier did. It simply was an advantage to have to rework the routines! Apart from this, a few of the routines I did for over 25 years earlier, where polished that much, they couldn't (at least currently) got more *improved*, and I was lucky I actually had captured them on an 8 mm movie, that years back was converted to VHS-tape and again later to DVDs, so here too I was amazed, I had to watch and rewatch to recall the finer points in handling.. I would advice each and everybody to capture their routines on tape or DVD, because memory does loose so much when time passes and also it is possible to reconstruct and improve, it takes too much time. Nevertheless, as mentioned, those routines one not has done regularily earlier and so probably not have been that polished and finished and neither got recorded actually did benefit from having to get reconstructed and renewed.. It was MUCH fun to do so and the result does please one, but still, the earlier already polished stuff benefits from being captured... Just my thoughts on this subject.
Learn a few things well.....this life is not long enough to do everything.....

Mike Skinner had good advice on this...he always took three tricks that flowed together and basically made one trick from them. This way he only had to remember one effect instead of three. But then again...Mike had a photographic memory if there was ever such a thing!

I've heard the theory of stringing 3 routines together. For me, that would mean forgetting three tricks with one forgotten routine Nick Maggio |
