Okay, I'm writing an article and want to reference the sex-changing frogs that "Jurassic Park" made so well known. Here's the catch.
I've been researching for three days and cannot find the name of a single species of sex-changing frogs! I see lots of references to "Those frogs that can change sex" but nobody seems to know what KIND of frogs they are. I contacted the woman who ran what seemed to be the most comprehensive website about frogs and she had no idea what species actually changed sex. So far I've found one kind of fish that changes sex, and a number of articles about a study that indicates a certain pestacide may be making one kind of frog change (from male to female). I've even found articles about a captive female shark that somehow managed to have babies even though she hadn't been near a male for six years (There is some debate as to whether she somehow managed to change the structure of her eggs so that no sperm was required, or if she had sexual organs of both kinds and had impregnated herself...either way it's weird). What I'm looking for are the frogs that change sex naturally, no pestacides involved, as a way to procreate when for some reason there are too many of one sex and not enough of the other. DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHAT SPECIES OF FROG THIS IS? (There may be more than one, but one is all I need). I'm starting to think the sex-changing frogs don't really exist at all. Maybe they're a more convincing version of the jackalope or snipes! Help! |

Hermaphroditism in frogs is a well-known phenomenon which has been observed for decades in all parts of the world.
One species of frog that seems to change its sex is the reed frog.

Unfortunately, lack of inflection online has foiled my attempts at humor once again. Now that would be an interesting subject to study...the impact of the internet on the American sense of humor. Certainly written humor doesn't have the same subtlties as spoken humor. Also, there was about a decade where joke-telling (not like comedians do, just a group of people sitting around swapping corny jokes) seemed to be a dying art. Every time I told a joke, people had already read it in an e-mail. This seems to be slacking off lately. I haven't received a "list-of-jokes" type forward in quite a while. Anyway back on subject. Did I mention you rock?! |

In mammals look into the Hyena. Females when they take over a pack as the leader grow a weenie! Not a joke...well...it might be a joke and I've certainly suspected the same in some ultra left wing human females...but it is a true fact of the animal world...amphibians shmibians...mammals rule. By the way, I would have put the proper term for a male appendage but it was censored out by the software....SOFT ware? Take a pill.
