there are others but that's the standard equation. And it's spelled parabola.

The x and y variables are, of course, interchangeable. There is no need, in the definition of a parabola, that it be a function.

In fact, the axis of symmetry for a parabola need not be vertical
or horizontal. So the GENERAL equation for a parabola is Ax^2 + Bxy + Cy^2 + Dx + Ey = F Where A, B, C, D, E and F are constants and B^2 = 4AC.

Okay, thank you. In case any of you are wondering why I asked it's because I found a way to transmit power from outlets in a house, through the air; so all electronics can be wireless. The receiver mechanizm use a parabola. So I was just wondering about the formula.
