Hi all,
Im looking for a cane holder/stand that is cylindrical in shape covering just over half the length of an average appearing cane. This means that all the canes I produce in my act are neatly arranged and still in sight. Do you know where I could buy one or get one made? thanks George |

Take a piece of pvc pipe, cut it to the proper length, pain it. then mount it using a flange to a wooden base, which you could possibly have wheels on. you may also use smaller diameter pvc and have a stand for each cane,

Hi Ed,
Thanks very much. I think I will do that but have them all fit in one stand instead of having separate stands. thanks George |

There are lots and lots of umbrella and cane stands out there, (try antique shops, garage sales, and on-line). You should be able to find one that fits visually with the rest of your act.
Oh, yeah, cane stands: some people actually collect walking sticks. A cane stand is almost like an umbrella stand, but generally comes with little partitions so the canes are separated. Try Design Toscano and the Smithsonian store.

You could also get a small pot or can at the bottom with a peice of stiff rubber hose bent into a hoop that attached to your table.
Also look at this spring open clothes hampers. Take off some of the fabric and the cane will be visible. And it packs. Or if you want recover with another peice of fabric.

Look in thrift stores. I have found a couple that I use to house my collection of canes. Also, I have a cylindrical wastebasket made from perforated metal that I bought in a store such as Target or K-Mart (I don't remember exactly where).

Hi guys,
I live in the UK so I don't have any of these shops. Do you know any shops in the UK or american shops where I can buy these online? thanks George |

I just ran across a crazy idea in an old book that was used to hang up brooms. You take a strap hinge (it looks like two triangles joined in the middle) and drill a hole in one for the diameter of the broom. The other half of the hinge is mounted upper most. The bottom is lifted up and the broom inserted from the bottom and it will hang there as the hinge wants to close on itself.
Now if you took this and edge the hole with tape (so you don't scratch the cane, you could insert the cane from the top and they would hang there. These would mount flat on the side of your table. I think it would work with a nightclub or a box table quite well. Richard

I had done the PVC route, I also place a silk over it as I don't want people to see they are nesting wands.

Some years ago I needed a couple of cane holders for my act. I came up with the idea of screwing a 1" metal saddle (the type used to secure electrical conduits) to each side edge of the middle shelf in my table. Underneath them on the bottom shelf I screwed two 35mm film canisters to hold the cane tips in position. Worked a treat.

For you non golfers, the plastic tubes used in golf bags are ideal for storing the cane, and dropping it into during the act.
Postal mailing tubes work as well, and come in different diameters to hold more then just one. Plastic tubes for drafting designs come in cardboard and plastic to travel with as well. |
