Most of us who perform Napkin Rose and possibly lead into it with Grab A Gift, agree that it's a great combination resulting in a unique and memorable souvenir, especially for table hopping or walk around.
However, no matter how quick you are with your folding and twisting, there's a certain period of time needed to segue from the end of Grab A Gift to a completed rose. So, considering that fact, what do all of you who perform this combination, or at least Napkin Rose by itself, say during the actual rose creation process? Unless you've hired strolling musicians to accompany your actions, you've got to fill in the time with something being said. Thanks for your feedback and ideas. |

Great question Ron. I just ordered this myself and was wondering the same thing! Thanks for bringing it up. Hopefully we'll both get some great responses.

Forgive my ignorance guys, but what is the "Grab a Gift" effect, and where is it written up?
Thanks in advance. Al.

Honest question Al.
Here's the product link with a full description: http://www.magic-mirror.co.uk And here's a Café link that will help explain further: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......5&28 Grab A Gift is an "effect" of sorts that you would use exclusively with the Napkin to Rose. The reason being that the outcome of Grab A Gift wouldn't make sense in any other application. (a quick read of the above sites will help explain that fact) And yes, to my knowledge this dealer in the UK is presently the only source for Grab A Gift. Unfortunately the current dollar to pound exchange rate makes it pricey for us on this side of the pond. (currently almost 2 to 1) Thanks - Ron |

Hey Ron
Big Al is English, he doesn't have an exchange rate. Al

Good point Al. So Big Al has the advantage on us Yanks, because for those paying in US dollars, that puts the effect at almost $30. Fortunately, in view of the exchange rate, the most recent sales from this dealer included free shipping to the US.
Now back to the original question: "What do say during the time period you're creating the rose?" |

Well, often when I do the effect I'm doing it for a child at the table. I just walk up & start folding, and the little girl, being a naturally curious child, watchs to see what I'm doing, and it's great fun to watch the look of realization gradually spread across their face as the rose takes shape.
Everybody wants to beleive.....we just help them along.

Thanks Ron, as Al points out I'm on the right side of the pond not to have to worry about the exchange rate. I've just bought some stuff from the US and got $1.89 to the £, ooouch, I'm glad I'm not an American coming to the UK for vacation!
I've just bought the effect from the site, looks like a great lead into Napkin Rose, thanks for the info. Regards Al.

Actually, I don't use "patter." That's the sound little feet make on bare wooden floors and I'm a bit too old to deal with that, thank you very much! Or, it's a very fast talking song in Gilbert and Sullivan, which I am delighted to put up with, but am still to old to perform!
Or am I? I am the very model of a modern close up prestidigitator I know my trick techniques from side steal to the stealthy, sneaky pocket animator..... Sorry..... I use a script. Even though it is printed in helvetica type font, which is not a script font at all..... and it goes something like this... "My dear lady, I am going to gify you with something special... something you have probably never been given before... something that no man has probably ever given you before... in fact, I am going to give you TWO things at once! I am going to give you your first MULTIPLE ORIGAMI! "I said ORIGAMI, sir! Not the other word! Sir! Sir!! Put down that chair!!!!!" Oddly enough, I have never been physically assaulted for that routine and the tips have almost uniformly been quite good! Of course, you have to do it with the right inflection and you have to pick your target carefully. I will often do an aside to the man ahead of time, saying that the gift to the lady will make him appear as if he set this up as a gift from HIM on top of it, making HIM look to be the hero of the routine as well. That gets him on MY side as well and gets him "in" on the joke. Lee Darrow, C.H.

Interesting and creative delivery Lee. And as you so well noted, "you have to pick your target carefully". (or you might become one)
This weekend I incorporated exactly the "put the man into the know" approach and it went over extremely well. I use Grab A Gift and had the man "win" a prize for the woman. Since he won "the napkin", I allowed him to give her the completed rose, but only after a tableside "consultation" with him in which I instructed him to include words of loving sentiment when he made the "presentation". He played it up and the response was terrific! While I didn't "gify" her with something special as Mr. Darrow apparently does, (sorry Lee) the entire experience was truly magical. Thanks - Ron |

I use the story that Simol Lovell teaches in his lecture notes. I saw him lecture on this, and he gave both a stand up and strolling method. The story of the "White Rose Café" is beautiful. I don't think that they are unaware of what you are making very long into the story.
I also enjoyed his thoughts on floating the rose, or turning it into a real rose, both of which cheapen his presentation. Scott Compton
