Hey, wand, hope I run into you at 3rd street. That's the pitch I work, too. I've attached a picture of me on the promenade doing a circle show from last summer. I think it was about a 40 dollar hat. Had about 100 people so the conversion wasn't so great. But that's 3rd street for you.
Best, Jim Click here to view attached image.

As some ppl know, I'm not a streetperformer, but I'm rather of a *pushy* type, so the street would fit me well if I was 30 years younger
I still would hit 'em hard and I think I know exactly what to perform out there. I'd forget the C&Bs, unless I would do the 6 large objects final loads and a melon! What I though would do, no doubt, is something similar to Dick Turpins Turnip, a surprising production of a turnip under a hat when it is last expected, or to vary, Percy Press production of a filled glass of water. Timetested material by some of the real buskers! Actually I think the C&Bs are great, but far too overworked by streetperformers and they don't register to layppl as they should unless one has a big finale like Gazzo Simple rouitnes drawing attention will do, they have to get built up and made spectacular, even if it's only a simple coinvanish.. The vansihing silk (TT) is standard, IF one has a good presentation as Cellini and others have, Billy Mc Queen, IIRC his name f.ex., does it well too. The Cellini cigarette-routine producing smoke and his acting, when performing it, is about the BEST material I've ever seen done by a street-magician!!!! A good roperoutine is also good, nothing (almost) can beat the original George Sands RopeSational, reused rope, no waste of rope..with a stromng finish.. A Chop Cup would be great too instead of the C&Bs, but not as the finale.. Just my thoughts on this..and I think a lot about magic performed in diff. venues

Speaking of Gazzo. I have only sen his cups and ball video filmed at the castle. I also performed it while doing street magic at Santa Monica, California.
Has anyone ever seen him perform on the street live??? I was wondering what kind of routines/tricks he does. I got the impression that he did mostly closeup stuff and then ended with his cups and balls. Can anyone give me a rundown of the types of tricks that he did?? Thanks |

I haven't seen him "live" in the streets, only in lectures and workshops, but there are videos of him performing on the streets. Check out the last half of "Gazzo Uncensored" That's the one with the Magic Castle performance on it. You will see his entire show from gathering the crowd all the way through to the end. Another good one is "Street Theater" available on Gazzo's site at http://www.magicpitch.com as well as some appearances on Cellini's "Art of Street Performing" series.
Just giving you a list of effects really won't help you. The tricks are secondary. You need to experience Gazzo, even if only on video, to understand why he's so successful. Oh, if you ever meet him, be sure to have him tell you what he really thinks of David Groves.

I'm not really that interested in the effects themselves. It's just that he seems to have built his whole career around the cups and balls and I had always heard that he did mostly close-up work. I was just curious as to how he morphed from closeup into the cups and balls with a zillion people around him.
I definitely will look into videos and website that you recommended! Thanks for the information! |

Waitpersons often "seed" a couple of $1 bills in a tip jar - so do street musicians - maybe you need to "seed" the audience by bringing a friend who will walk over, stand where you want the crowd to stand, and watch you with great interest ... even throw a bill into your hat (or whatever) at collection time.
Your real magic secret - he may think he's helping build the audience, but by providing someone to play to, he's really helping you get past your "choke"! |

Silverfire9, I was at the Folklife and didn't see you, unless you were the 'mobile magician" (guy with table attached to him, with legs that moved). don't give up and try again.
Hi Tom, I saw you there took a picture of you, you were busy and I was leaving so didn't get to say Hi. So now I am saying HI, you were looking good. I will see you at the next "ring of Fire" meeting. You both have more nerve than I do yet. Craig

Currently Gazzo does: Silk vanish, card to mouth, floating card, and cups.
Like Dave said, the list doesn't help much. You've got to see the whole act. |

I caught Gazzo's act last weekend. He did the silk vanish, a few card tricks, floating card was a sight gag, it wasn't magic, and his cups. None of what he did was really close-up. I imagine that there were maybe 20 feet between him and the crowd.
It wasn't the magic that was so great though. It was his mastery of the crowd. Gazzo is just plain funny. He's fun to watch. He's a little acerbic but that plays well here. I haven't seen the dvd's, but in person he's a riot. I laughed out loud several times and I put a 5 in his hat. He deserved it. Oh, I wish I could tell you some of the things that he did but that wouldn't be fair or right to him. So instead I'll tell you just the tiniest taste. He asked one of the guys from the audience to choose a card, just name one. The guy shouted out the name of a card. "Good sir, now would you step forward? There, you named the six of hearts? Good, would you check your shirt pocket?" Everyone waited and the main looked inside, he shook his head no. "It's not there?" Gazzo asked. "Of course it's not there! Now how could I have gotten the card into your pocket all the way from over here? Why did you even look for it?" I just didn't expect that. I'm not criticizing in any way his skills as a magician. I'm just saying that his show is great entertainment centered on magic. |

Busking is about pleasing the specs. Entertainment flat out pays better than magic. How much would you pay for an excellent invisible pass with cards, or the worlds best retention vanish with coins? Probably not as much as when you see somebody's cell phone ring during Gazzo's routine, him handle it...... When busking, it is more about connecting and entertaining than magic.
But like Cellini, just because you don't see Gazzo do strong magic, (his cups are pretty strong) don't think for a minute that he isn't capable of it BroDavid

I saw Gazzo fry a bunch of magic castle magicians with his egg bag and a mind reading card trick that he will be marketing from his website.

I saw Gazzo handle cards during one of the NY Magic Symposiums in the 80's. The man can handle a deck of cards. Make no mistake about it.

PLEASE don't think that I implied in any way that Gazzo's magic was less than superb. I was simply saying that, as fine as his magic is, his entertainment is far greater.

That's what I'm telling you....the magic needs to be tight but the handling of the audience, making them laugh, entertainment...thats the only thing that's important
that's why people fail when working the streets....its hard if you don't have the talent to make them laugh........if you can do that then you have something.... koz |

More than that. Gazzo is a genuinely decent person. We had coffee after his performance and I saw him call over a fellow busker to give him some helpful advice. It was unsolicited advice but very much needed in this case.
It's dangerous to give out unsolicited advice, you never know how the other person is going to take it, but Gazzo went out on a limb to help this person and in the process gained a lot of respect from me. I count Gazzo as an honorable man and I can't pay anyone a higher compliment. |
