I prefer the first video since it shows you his Matrix, the Card Under the Glass, Bandarama, and the Dyslexic Queens.

Both of these are great.
I've got them on VHS right now, but need to get them on dvd. The titles of these two videos definately describe what you get: Some very usable and effective magic from a great entertainer and teacher. If you can't afford them both, get one now and buy the other when you can. |

J.C is one the best magicians on the planet. Both dvds are worth their weight in gold and his book has some of the best "forgotten" pieces that you will ever find and cannot be recommended highly enough.
His work on the "Think-A-Card" (Titled Estimation)plot is some of the best that I have found. I have studied the plot extensively and have tried many different tip and touches, but I always find myself going back to his versions and outs when working for real people. His work simply floors people. "Dislexic Queens" looks like real magic in his hands and is a trick taht I used for years (and still do) while building a reputation. It's not difficult at all, but is stunningly visual. It's an "Assembly" without the boredom. The "Wagnerian Miracle" is a magician fooler taht is still good for laymen, when you hit it (and you will) it kills. "Spectral Silk" is the best use for the "Haunted hanky" that has even been thought of. It is worth the price of the book or dvds alone. I would dare state that I do not know of another card trick that beats the laymen reactions that you will get from this trick, it literally gets screams when perfromed. In an age where the "Torn and Restored" card plot has run it's course for God's sake his still proves why it was the basis for everyone esle to build on. You can't beat it for it simplicity and practicality and you will not have the Kung Fu death grip either. His tips on the "Card Under Drink" are the best that you will find as well. He is truly a master at the effect. As stated in a post above his "Penny matrix" is fantastic as well. "Omni Twist Collectors" is my favorite collectors handling bar none. I use it ALL THE TIME, for magicians and laymen. The first two twist sequences even catch seasoned magicians off guard, so you know laymen don't stand a chance. I loevto do this effect for magicans and watch their eyes glaze over when the cards all turn face up at once when they know that it just can't be. This routine an audience so caught up in the twisting sequence that they forget for a moment about the three selection, that is until the impossibly show up between each of the four Queens face down. This routine kils, and Ihave never met one other magican that perfroms it...forgotten gem. His "Polish Marked Deck" is another jaw dropper and funny as hell to boot. it's one of the best routines of its kind (Color Changing pack) and has a very funny joke tied in that you get to enjoy for yourself when working for real poeple. "Royal Detectives" is a sandwiched card routine (more along the lines of the Jennings Visitor plot) that is very suprising to a laymen. Once again, real people magic. Which brings me to what I think is some of the best advice on the "Gambler's Cop" that you will EVER find. Wagner is unquestionably one of the best in the world at the move and really gives some great advice on making it work for everyone. Wagner and Larry jennings motivated me to make the move all that it can be in my work and I can't brag enough on what you can learn from them both even after you think you know the move. There is trick in the book that is not on the dvds titled "Whispering Wagner", once again I know no one that uses the effect and that is good becasue it FLOORS people. You can't beat the thought of card plot and in his own words. "This one was almost not included the book becuase it was to good to give up!" When a true legend makes that statement it is worth whatever the cover charge to get a look at what the person is talking about. This is obvioulsy not an extensive review of the contents, more like just a few random favorites from a wealth of phemomenal material. "Commercial Magic" is one of the only books I own that I feel like I should send J.C a check every year for the cost of the book instead of just paying for it once...and then I think I'd still owe him for what he has given me in magic through the printed page. How many books do you own taht would make you say that?

If I'm not mistaken, JC put out a subsequent VHS tape through Brad Burt entitled "The Queens Debate" and, on this tape JC states that it is an improved handling of the "Dyslexic Queens" effect.
I agree with Clark that JC's (3/4) torn and restored card is simply amazing. I don't know if it "started it all" but it certainly was one that was highly performed by many. JC later released a "full restoration" T&R card effect, but I didn't care for it nearly as much. True, you get a full restoration, but I felt the original 3/4 T&R was more direct and visual. Both of these videos are great, and, from what I understand, they have now been re-released on DVDs. Mike

He did release the "Queen's Debate" with Brad Burt, but in my opinion it was not an improvement on the effect. The reason for the handling change was from listening to magicians too much. Magi had pointed out that the original routine had a failed logic because the three cards that assembled to the leader packet actually vanished from the starting packets. In most all other assembly routines three cards transpose instead of actually disappearing.
I have done this routine hundreds of times and never in all these years has a laymen questioned starting with 16 cards, then having only 13 for about twenty seconds and then ending with 16 again. I know this is very hard to follow if you do not know the two handlings, but in my mind the bottom line is his original looked more like real magic and I have had much better reactions out of it with laymen than any other that I can think of off the top of my head. To me it is a classic magician "problem" that a laymen could care less about...but that is only my opinion. the 3/4 torn and restored as Turk says is WONDERFUL. I agree with him that I did not ike the full restoration as much. Once again, classic magician thinking, more is better. David Regal (in Star Quality) had allot to do with the torn and restored evolution as Paul Harris has, but I have to say that I see ALLOT of Wagner's work in all of the new handlings that come out now. Everyone owes him a big nod. As a side note, In a recent phone conversation Cody Fisher shared with me the reasoning that he used for laymen concerning the last piece not being restored and it was brilliant. I'm sure he would share if you contact him. He has a wonderful justification, very well motivated. Get everything you can with Wagner's name on it and don't forget "Seven Secrets" while you are at it!!!!
