My opinions are entirely my own. Your results may vary. If I disagree with someone, I disagree. I've gone head to head with differences of opinion with some notable names and walked away from many who would be considered nobodies. There's a few really interesting conversations with my involvement in The Good News.
I don't buy the latest gimmicks or copy the latest TV special. I ask for constructive feedback. I'm pretty sure my show is quite unique. I've lived in magically isolated venues for the last eight years. Someone could copy my show if they like (and were willing to actually practice) but I doubt the nose or the shoes would fit their personna. My particular brand of humor doesn't come naturally to anyone and has taken years of hard work to get me where I am. If you check my recent posts, you'll see that this thread and one that I started a few years back have pretty much dominated my time here. As long as we can avoid personal attacks, I'm game to however you'd like to steer this thread. After all, it is your topic to drive the way you want. If I lose interest in it, I just stop posting. I repeat, The Café can be what you want it to be. You want "Magicians helping Magicians" then that is most definitely here. You want adversity, that's here as well. You want contraversy, you don't have to dig deep for that either. This topic is a new topic that hasn't been run into the ground already so I'm posting, as are a few others as long as it's objective. I'm surprised that someone hasn't started an identical topic and wondered why nobody is participating. I haven't even posted in the clowning section much since I have little to add to what's been said. That doesn't mean I don't check it when I drop by though.

Would you clowns quit tooting your horn, we're having a discussion here!
Deke, I haven't read the Little Darlings section. So, I may have missed your original premise entirely. Kregg

I may as well enter the fray as I too am a former staff member and had requested that this not be moved here but left in little darlings. The reason being is that the move took the original post out of its context - which was a comment on the kids forum not on the Café in general.
I can agree with the decision to let this move stand but I also hate to see the direction this appears to be going as it has caused a valid query to go from benign to an attack (supposed) on the whole board to what has now become negative personal comments. To respond in context - no I don't think the kids forum is drying up but I do suspect that those who post often have pretty much said what they have to say. In some cases several times, and are now just waiting for new blood to catch up. A lot of this kind of thing could easily be solved with good use of the search function. Frank Tougas

If I misunderstood the original context, I am sorry. I aparently didn't catch the intended meaning. To a great extent, I agree with Frank but I didn't perceive this as an attack nor did I intend to belittle another's opinion.

I didn't realize this topic had been moved from the "Little Darlings" to Food for Thought. I studiously avoid the "Little Darlings" section, just as I studiously avoid performing children's shows. They are just not my audience. I did them for about 20 years, so I am speaking from experience.
I should have understood that from the references to Barry Mitchell. I'll keep my opinion of his work to myself. He stays busy, so he must be doing something right. I'm not going to go to the "Little Darlings" section to read the multitude of posts, but having glanced at some of the posts in it, I see that there is a parallel between that section and this one.

Please! I never said anything negative about Mr. Mitchell or his work. I simply stated that he was obscure. Granted, it could be argued that *anyone* in magic is obscure -- it's quite a small industry by almost any standards -- but he is not what I consider a highly visible player in the magic arena. That doesn't mean he's not good, nor does it imply that high-profile members of our community are necessarily better or worse.
Also, my clown reference was a joke. I haveno idea how this turned into a clown thread. I just thought the "Li'l Darlin's" area was getting a bit bland. That's all. |
