I have started a new blog on magic. It will contain my thoughts and opinions on magic theory, the business side of magic, the magic scene, the current state of magic and magicians and maybe some effects from time to time. I'm beginning it by posting the articles I wrote for the column I used to have in "Smoke and Mirrors."
If you are interested, please stop by and have a look. Then let me know what you think! Click Here! Thanks, Scott

Scott, it's almost as if you created this blog just for me. I came (back?) into magic too late to find your books, and missed these columns also. This is good, meaty stuff.
Thanks again! *jeep! --Chet

Thank YOU, sir! Your kind words are appreciated, and it is very gratifying to know that there are some readers who find the material interesting and worthwhile.
I'll be posting other stuff there, too, including some effects and reviews and maybe some interviews of magic friends. Also, if anyone has any suggestions or requests for material to be covered either in my Pro-Files column on Visions or on my blog, please feel free to post them here or send me a PM or email. Regards, Scott Posted: Jun 2, 2005 4:46am Those of you who love The Magic Café will definitely want to read the entry on my blog dated June 2, 2005. Click here! I've just posted one of my favorite card / mentalism routines on my blog. It's called "Blind-Sighted" and believe me, it is a KILLER!
Effect: With your eyes closed (or you can even be blindfolded) and your back turned, the participant mentally selects a number and then quietly counts down to that number in HER OWN SHUFFLED DECK. She remembers the card at that number. She then squares the deck and hands it to you. You hold it under the table so that, even if you were to peek, you would not be able to see the deck or any of its cards. You ask her to concentrate. After a bit of effort (after all, if we could actually read minds it would be difficult), you correctly reveal her mentally selected number and card! Not to sound like a dealer ad, but here are some key points... -The deck can be borrowed. It is not gaffed in any way. -The spectator shuffles before you begin. -Your eyes are really closed through both the selection process and the revelation. -There are no extra gaffs or duplicate cards of any kind. Just you and the deck. -No memorization or difficult mental gymnastics required. -NO SLEIGHT OF HAND! (There is a very little bit of handling, but nothing I would consider a sleight or move.) -IT'S FREE! Check it out. The entry is June 3, 2005, "Trick Break #1." Click here!

I've got a couple more things up. First, is a report on my latest performance for my train gig, in which I (quite accidentally) had the most magical ending ever to my Ambitious Card Routine.
Also, for some reason, Shane at Visions didn't receive the article for my Pro-Files column for the current issue, so I posted it on my blog. If history is any indicator, this article is gonna to make some folks angry, and I'll likely get some nasty emails, but I think stuff like this needs to be said. The article's title is "In a Rush to Put Out the Trash." Let me know what you think. Thanks for your support and interest, Scott Posted: Jun 13, 2005 12:23am Tonight's new post is my advice to those who want to become either part-time or full-time pros. You'll either love it or hate it!

A brutally true account, which deserves a great deal of discussion. (Not on this forum, though.) Keep reminding me, so that I'll comment on it at your site - as soon as I get caught up with my e-mail, finish a lecture, finish my paperwork for the above mentioned lecture, do the laundry, pack....

I caught the article about what happened on the train. Events like that separate the men from the boys. Being able to think on your feet, no matter the velocity.
Will you walk into my parlour? said the Spider to the Fly,
Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy; The way into my parlour is up a winding stair, And I've a many curious things to show when you are there. Oh no, no, said the little Fly, to ask me is in vain, For who goes up your winding stair -can ne'er come down again. |

LOL! Thanks! Yeah, that was something. (Pretty much all of my career's "greatest moments" were unexpected occurrences that I played off as though they were all part of the show!)
Actually, on the train, it's not so much the velocity (though it was in this case) as it is the unpredictable motion of the cars! Took me a bit to get to a point where I was comfortable standing and performing on the train. Now I barely notice.

Interesting point you make regarding greatest moments being unexpected occurrences. Having the presence of mind to fully develop these occurrences speaks volumes. Does wonders for your rep, too.
I check your blog all the time. Thanks.

I've been on vacation and taking care of other pressing matters, so it's been a bit since I've posted anything new on my blog. But there's a new post up (just published) about those who want you to tell them the methods of effects you've purchased but they haven't. Am I the only one exasperated by this?
I imagine a lot of folks will agree with me and just as many (if not more) will disagree. But at least you'll know where I stand on the matter-which may not matter (to you) at all! Posted: Jun 28, 2005 12:48pm Just put up trick break #2, an impromptu, ungaffed complete vanish of a coin (borrowed or otherwise) with an entertaining presentation. Posted: Jul 6, 2005 3:58am I really appreciate those of you who have posted comments both her and on the blog. Feel free to continue to do so or to PM or email me with any questions or comments. I will do my best to reply in a timely manner. Just published this week's entry, "Out of Date?" regarding the worth of old books and old routines. If you feel strongly one way or the other on this issue, please read the article and respond. Posted: Jul 12, 2005 1:49am I've been getting chided a bit about being "negative" on my blog. I respond to this and explain why I write about the things that I do in the latest installment.

Hey Scott!
Great Blog! I must first say that I don't read blogs, at all! But I find myself coming back to yours time and time agian! I've read every entry thus far and have read all you're Visions articles as well. And I must say, you are very wise sir! Although many may perceive your opinions as negative (I'm not one of them), your ability to speak out against what is bothering you about magic today truly shows your passion for the art. Like a knight defending his honor, it is understandable and admirable to step to the plate and right the wrongs that lead to disgrace. (Ok, maybe that's a little much) Your Pro-Files are also a very useful resource for me as an aspiring magician, and your generosity is greatly appreciated (i.e., sending me your first 5 Pro-Files articles before you had posted them on your blog). I can now use these Pro-Files to become professional since I just bought my first trick (That was a joke, don't kill me! HA!) I enjoy your parellels to the music community and take these analogies to heart. As a college music education major, I feel I've learned a lot about performing through my experience with magic and as you and I both know, there is much in common between the two mediums. I also really liked your entry about the train and how it was truly a "magical experience", and it seems like you've been very successful for many years now. I therefore would love to see an entry or a Pro-File about some performances that weren't quite so stellar and how you adapted to these to get to where you are today. I'll be eagerly awaiting your next article/advice (whether I like it or not. HA!) Take care, Eric D. |

Thanks, Eric! that's very kind of you!
Today's installment is the article that I think is the most important piece I've ever written. Many of you who have been readers of my column have verified that to me. But for those who haven't read Pro-Files or my books, I have posted it on my blog: http://scottfguinn.blogspot.com/2005/07/reminder.html Eric, I can give you a couple of examples right now of shows that weren't so stellar: A group of construction workers who were going to a strip club immediately after my show; the biggest man I've ever seen in person (and he'd had afew drinks and was in a sour mood) deciding I had said something nasty to him (hadn't even started the show yet--I was setting up), storming toward the stage (knocking tables, chairs and people out of his way in the process) to beat the crud out of me; a show at the state mental hospital where they had a chain link fence bolted to the front of the stage so the residents couldn't attack me: a drunken brawl in the back of the room; a school show where I wasn't feeling well and later that day found I had pneumonia and a temperature of 104: etc. If you perform often enough, you're gonna have some bad shows. Thankfully they are few and far between. I think I will write an article about that--thanks for the idea!

Hey everyone.
Thanks for your support. Due to some unforeseen issues, my blog has been deleted. At this point, I don't really feel like going to the trouble of posting all the details, so that's it, at least for now. But thanks for your interest while it lasted! A few people, including one of the biggest names in magic in the world, have seen fit to appropriate some of my writing to put money in their pockets, without permission or credit. So I have decided not to continue publishing on the web. Again, thanks to those of you who honestly supported me. But stuff like this has left a bad taste in my mouth, and I think I'll limit my efforts to just performing for laymen. Regards, Scott
