Anybody knows who invented the "Crazy Man's Handcuffs" trick?

Sure thing. The effect begans as Arthur Setteringtons "penetrating rubberbands". I'm not sure where it was published first, but it can be found in Elastrix. There's a version in Tarbell #7, but as far as I remember, it's not exactly the CMH we know today.
CMH became immensly popular after David Copperfield did it in one of his TV specials, and people like Michael Ammar and Dan Harlan and others has put some fine touches into the trick. |

Thanks for filling in the blanks. I do have one more question, do danish pastries come from Denmark? Al

I don't know about pastries , but it actually was Daryl who gave the *Penetrating Rubberbands* the name *Crazy Men's Handcuffs* and Michael Ammar actually gives credit to Daryl for the permission of using this name.

There are tricks that will last as long as magic like cut and restore, professors nightmare, and CMH. I knew about Ammar, Copperfield, and Harlan but how long ago did Arthur Setterington come up with this trick. The danish question is because I am a comedian and I can't shut the jokes off. Al

There is not really any information AFAIK re the exact year Arthur Setterington -who is british- came up with his original handling, even the sources where it fisrt was described do vary.
Some say it was first published in Peter Warlocks *Pentagram* others say *Elastrix* was the first publishing it in written form. I tend to believe it was in *The Pentagram*. As mentioned in many places, Arthur Setterington invented it, Herb Zarrow did refine it and some of the great exponents/handlers of it where amongst others that frenchman Bob Jardin.. Michael Ammar first later made his own handling and presentation improvments. You might do a search via *Google* that probably will reveal more. Do comedians eat danish pastries? (I don't, which then doesn't make me a comedian )

Thank you very much. Yes Werner all Americans eat French fries, French toast, Danish pastries, Belgan waffels, Greman chocolate cake, Canidian bacon, Mexican jumping beans, Polish sausage, Swiss cheese, Sweedish meat balls, and all other ethnic foods. Now you tell an old geography buff where is Lukerland. Al

Thanks for the responses. If my memory serves me well, I can remember reading in "The Magic of Michael Ammar, that he gave credit to Daryl for naming this particular trick the "Crazy Man's Handcuffs. Actually I never saw Copperfield do this until I saw it on his Illusion dvd. I first saw this trick on a tv special called "Mysteries of Magic". And I practically learned it from there but mine was a crude version coz they never realy taught the trick. I finally got the right handling when I got Michael Ammar's book.

As an American I look down on all other countries, So I choose to label all foreign (and so therefore lesser) food product differenty. I.E. "Freedom Fries", "Keep and bear arms pastries", "Close our borders and keep the world out jumping beans", "Bleached chedder cheese with holes that tastes different", "We're better than anyone, and if you disagree you are a terrorist Sausage". As my internet usage is probably monitored, I will be sending my future messages from Guantanamo, I believe it's in Cuba or rather "The next best thing to America".
As far as the CMH I am slightly depressed when I see that everyone with knowledge of rubberband magic seems dependant on this one trick (While quite good). There are so many things one can do with a couple of rubberbands I can't imagine why this one thing is so specifically popular. I really need to up my dosage.
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

I'm surprised that is not the kind of warm fuzzy feeling I would exspect from a blue state resident. Al

I'm warm and fuzzy, I promise. But I woke up too early this morning.I'm a blue man in a blue state in a red town. I am a confused individual.

I have read on this forum that Ammar taught it to Copperfield for his TV special. In the Dan Harlan magic with rubber bands vol 1 he does some interesting things with the basic CMH, and Vinny Marini who is a member of the magic Café takes it even further. I suggest you PM Vinny and just maybe he will send you one of his rubber band demo video's
Have fun Al

While we're on the subject of CMH - I used to have it on my table-hopping set, but got tired of it because everybody and their dog was doing it. So I dropped it for about 10 years. Now, I've taken it up again for the sole purpose of watch stealing. I use the finale where the spectator holds one rubber band and it's ideal for stealing a watch.
Oh - and thanks to Werner for the correction - you're correct my friend |

I already have Vinny's demo videos. They were quite cool. Right now I'm not doing the CMH. I'm giving it a rest. What I substituted for it is Stargazer.

For me I like it the way how it ends up in a star. I get many starled responses from it. A friend also suggested to do it in different shapes. I might try that one day. I'm still fine wih the original effect.
